  1. Hullo, TurnerE.
  2. When I first came to Britain my parents travelled with me, so that I could use most of their allowance for my stuff. Can you parents travel with you? They'll be quite helpful when it comes to lugging things from the airport all the way up to Oxford. Only bring the things you really need. (Books are, needless to say, necessities.) It didn't take me long to realise I didn't need most of the things my parents insisted on my bringing. (Now why on earth would you need blank CD-Rs?)

I'd definitely wait for Royal Holloway. Don't they have to respond before the deadline?
  3. The Royal Holloway website says that you'd need qualifications in either Latin or Greek. I suppose you must have applied for Ancient History. Otherwise...you might as well fumble along now that you've got this far!

Sappho and I fished out a spoon and glass from the Wells fountain. You might try your luck; they can very well have thrown some more cutlery in over the course of the year. It seems to be a boarding school habit. (I would know.)

You might find this thread useful. It hasn't occurred to me that I'd need a gown till now. Though, strangely, it mentions absolutely nothing about teddy bears. Outrageous.

  4. It's almost funny how all the people I know who got accepted for Classics at Oxford tell me that they are not sure whether it's actually the right thing for them...

Well, languages are always a good idea

That's exactly what Lent is about, realising that you don't actually need things you enjoy. You should give up something next year. Not much, just something, you can always give up more the next year. That's what I've been doing for six years now

That doesn't sound corny, I prefer this to complete unreligious people So is your family not religious either?

  5. Royal Holloway is gorgeous! I'd love to go there. Which course are you applying for? I thought you'd need qualifications in Latin and Greek to apply for Classics?

Well, I'm afraid I'm officially going to Greek camp. I've sent my application, and although they haven't definitely accepted me, they say they're pretty sure they're going to. It's a shame that both camps go on at the same time, or else I'd have joined both!

Oh, and look for glasses and spoons in the fountain in Wells. They have a tendency to show up in there...
  6. By the way, when do you get your results? We get ours on 18th August (I believe), which wouldn't be long after Greek camp!

I'm sorry about UCL. But then universities are known to make stupid, unreasonable decisions. And hey, who needs UCL when you've already got Oxford!
  7. I don't know how you can be expected to learn Latin up to GCSE level in one summer. I spent more than two years self-teaching myself and then under my teachers' guidance to get up to that level. But not to put you off - I've heard that Latin camp can work miracles, and if you need any help I'm always ready to help.

Aha. I remember Jasper saying that. "The very worst is English Literature and the next worst is Modern Greats." Ha, screw you, PPE-ists, for stealing our title. Literae Humaniores all the way!

I think "I've heard that your owner wants to sell you for a black Jaguar" might work on Rufus. Miss Potter actually told me that.
  8. [part I]
    Salve!
Oh, thank you! Oh, there's nothing to feel sorry about, actually I would only have made Edinburgh my insurance, and only if they had asked me for something worde than 1.6, which is what St Andrews is asking for. Now I won't have an insurance in Britain, so if I miss their conditions, I'll go to Heidelberg instead, which is a brilliant uni as well, especially for Classics. But I have to say that it's ver unlikely that I don't get the grades they ask for because we have been collecting points for two years, so I already have 2/3 of my grade (if that makes any sense to you ).
Well, UCL obviously don't know what the're missing! Royal Holloway seems nice too. I haven't really looked at it a lot but admittedly don't remember why
  9. [part II]
Applying to French unis, are you sure? If you have any motivation to learn German, and at some point, if you want to become a serious classicist you'll have to learn it anyway, you could consider German unis, too!
I don't know how many days, tbh It's until Easter, some four weeks or so. I'm still enjoying Lent, not counting the days yet! Have you given up anything? Are you actually Christian at all?

  10. Oh, it's not another vocab list. It's a sixty-four page one consisting of eight parts. I should have checked the page-count.
