I'm not really sure, I think it depends on the essay. One of mine that I'm sending I have used footnotes and a bibliography etc so that obviously includes my sources but the other two don't.
I'm not really sure what you mean when you say should you give them the outline of the essay though?

Hi Too bad! I've been wanting to study at Cambridge for well over three years now, but back then I thought I wanted to read PPS, or MML or even AMES. I like so many things!

It´s usual here because schools want to provide you with an all-round education.

But why? Is that the norm at your school? PRETTY POINTLESS since unis look at three of your A-levels to make you an offer.

Hi there! Well, I like Roman history and also twentieth century (especially WW2). One topic I don't know much about yet is the history of the middle east, so I'd like to cover that at university. I prefer social history to economic history. As for English history, I like the Elizabethan era. Are you coming to the Cambridge open days?
