I'm not doing the 2010 past paper until tomorrow, sort of like a final test before the actual exam. So if you want the answers from me, you'll have to wait.
Concerning the visual questions, if you feel that you're finding them difficult then it is perhaps best to skip them and return to them later, if you have time. It wouldn't take more than 5 seconds to mark an answer in the answer sheet so if you, by the end of the exam, find that you don't have time to go back to that question, then it is best to guess. I wouldn't recommend guessing unless you have to.
For question 34 and 35, you have to clearly understand the following: The growth of the pound would only affect the overseas market. If, for example, the pound weakens, it would affect the revenue (assuming that it costs the same no. of pounds) from exports, but not within the country, as people would still use pounds, regardless of its relative strength. For example:
Let's say 1 pound = 1 euro in 1998 and 0.5 euro in 2000.
I'm buying 10kg of rice, and the price is 10euros/kg (overseas).
In 1998, the revenue would be 100pounds whereas it is only 50 pounds in 2000.
Now, on to the questions.
In question 34, we can see that the output in farm crops decreases as time goes by whereas the output of horticulture increases. This tells us that the farm crops rely much more on revenue from overseas trade as their revenue has gone down in accordance to the decreasing overseas prices.
We are told that the 5% drop in the value of the pound was entirely responsible for the drop in value of sheep in 1998. We see that the 5% drop corresponds to roughly 8 million pounds. This follows the same logic as I outlined earlier. If a drop of 5% corresponds to 8 million, then a drop of 100% (i.e. the pound becomes totally worthless and they get the products virtually for free) would result in a 8/0.05=160 million drop. So, 160 million of the revenue comes from exports. If you divide 160 by the total output, you get close to 63%.
According to the algorithm, the elevator would go the closest stop every time. After it has started moving, we are told that someone requested it from the 7th floor. So, it would move like this:
7--->10-->7--->4--->0-->14--->16. This would correspond to 5 stops BEFORE reaching floor 16.
The most important part here is that half the marbles are green and the other half of them are red (from the right hand bag). Now, let's look at the implications of alternatives 2 and 4. 2 states that the right hand bag starts of with more than two marbles in it. 4 states that the right hand bag had marbles of only one colour. This is clearly a contradiction. Why?
We've been told that after she takes one from the left hand bag and put it into the right hand bag, and then one from the right hand bag and put it in the left hand bag, there are the same no. of green and red marbles in the right hand bag. But, if she had had 3 marbles in the beginning (remember, it says 2+), and all of them had been green/red, then it is impossible for her to have an equal no. of red and green (since the no. of marbles would have been uneven.)
Sorry for the lateness of my answers, but here goes:
Question 5: We are told that there are 5 pairs of twins, of which 3 pairs have their birthday on the same month and that at least one grandchild has a birthday every month. So, the minimum number of grandchildren would be the minimum no. of children which woudl fit into these two criteria. If 3 pairs of twins have their birthdays on the same month, that leaves 2 pairs of twins.
Because we're looking for the minimum, it would be best to have the remaining pairs on two different months. That means that the twins have been distributed over 3 months. So, we'd need at least 9 more grand children to fill in the other criteria (1+ every month).
That adds up to 19. But there's one final criteria we have to fulfill, namely that there are twice as many granddaughters as grandsons. This means that the no. of grandchildren has to be divisible by 3. 19 isn't. 20 isn't. 21 is. Hence, the minimum no. of grandchildren is 21.
We change the drilling costs to 1 million because the new drilling costs would have to take into account the cost of the insurance. 800 000 + 200 000= 1 000 000. As for the other questions, you need to clarify which questions belong to which paper.
Question 33: I can probably guess what anaswer you got (E?) and it was most likely due to a reading error. Read the question carefully and you notice that it says "in the proportion of patients seen by nurses". This means the increase of patients seen by nurses in proportion to patients seen by all clinicians. In 1995 it was 0.8/3.9 and in 2006 it was 1.8/5.26. We can approximate these values to 0.8/4 and 1.8/5.4, to get values which are easier to work with. These would give us a result of 0.2 and 1/3, respectively. So, the increase in percentage would be ((1/3)-(1/5))/(1/5). This equals 2/3. Hence, D.
Question 31: First of all, you have to realise that since the images are in 2D, we can't deduce whether the view shows the cylinders which are in the front, the middle or behind (so for example if there is a stack of 2 in front of a stack of 3, we would still see a stack of 3). If you study the shapes, C is not a possible shape. We know that 10 cylinders have been removed, and we are can see approximately where they are from the X direction. To get the view shown in 'C', at least 4 cylinders of those in the middle have to be removed and a further 2 from the first row. Hence, at least 11 cylinders have to be removed for this view to be possible. That's 1 too many.
In the beginning, one of the vinaigrettes (takes too long to type it so I will abbreviate it Vin) has an equal proportion of vinegar and oil (90 ml each) whilst the other has 120ml oil and 60ml vinegar.
So, if he pours 90ml from the one with equal proportions to the Vin with uneven proportions, he would effectively add 45ml each (it's the same principle of concentration as in chemistry). So, the new Vin bottle would have 165ml oil and 105ml vinegar. The new proportion of oil is thus 165/270 which can be simplified to 11/18.
So, the new Vin bottle has 11/18 oil and 7/18 vinegar. 90ml of this would thus contain 90*11/18=55ml oil and 35ml vinegar.
Let's call the first Vin bottle Vin1 and the other Vin2.
At the start, Vin1 had 90ml of oil. After pouring 90ml of it into Vin2, the amount of oil decreaesd to 45ml(90-45). Now we're adding 55ml. The amount of oil is thus 100ml.
Vin2, as we stated earlier, had 165ml. We then poured 55ml of it into Vin1. Hence, it has 110ml oil left.
