Armenia (1988) and Los Angeles (1986) are always good examples to quote. Both were similar size in similarly densely populated areas yet the Armenia earthquake killed 20,000 and the LA earthquake killed 9 due to the quality of building construction. Another good example is the Mexico City earthquake of 1985 - massive damage in central Mexico City due to amplification of surface waves in the sedimentary basin. As for landslides, I think the best example is a Peru earthquake - 1970 I think.
