Advice about Guildford

Hey people!

I'm at the point on deciding which Uni to make my first choice, and i'm a little unsure what Surrey would be like for me. First of all, the course seems really attractive which the placement year, but i'm not sure if the uni is for me.

I can't goto the next open day as i seen the train is going to cost me £100 and i'd rather not spend that just to visit for a day!

I'm from Liverpool and as you can imagine i'm used to being round a lively urban city with a good nightlife, nice women. bla bla etc.

Can anyone give me advice about the uni itself, the area Guildford in general? My other choices are Liverpool uni and Newcastle, but the courses aren't as attractive as they are only 3 years and aren't exactly what i'd want to do although it is similiar. I'm not the best at studying but i'm fairly clever in that respect, i do like a good night out and good company though!

Advice is welcomed for me:smile:

I've only really been past the uni on the bus so can't really give specific details but it's quite a green campus with a lake/big pond in the middle...with swans...tbh I don't really like the feel of the uni but obviously it's totally subjective and I'm sure others will provide a deeper insight for you.

Ok, on to Guildford...it's a lively medium-sized town. It's got a shopping centre and lots of other generic high street shops, House of Fraser, Laserquest, the Spectrum (a large modern sports centre), Odeon, lots of bars and great restaurants tucked along the cobbled side streets. It's also situated on the River Wey (I think?!) which is lovely especially on a sunny day as there are lots of really good pubs along the river. Umm, there's an active theatre too.
One thing I'm not sure about is clubs...the only ones I've seen are Mambo, Harpers (which is constantly changing it's name) and a couple of others...though I'm sure there's probably more somewhere.

Guildford's quite an affluent area so there's quite an overwhelming amount of rich kids (no doubt why they opened the new Jack Wills store on the high street argh) though the majority of them are nice and up for a laugh etc...shockingly enough :p: Never come across a proper snob during all my time here.

Oh and we have a castle! With beautiful gardens.

Sorry that post was so garbled! If you want to know anything else, feel free to ask!

ye, thanks for that. I'm just a little unsure because i could go to Newcastle which is basically like here but they talk different and it's East but the course isn't as attractive as Surrey's, decisions... decisions, dont you love them!

As much as I love living in Guildford, I think that if you want a more urban bustling place then Newcastle is for you. I've heard from so many people that Newcastle has an *awesome* nightlife (which would almost definitely put Guildford's to shame) and I think that the uni seems much more active and just generally...better. I dunno, Surrey uni just seems so cold and boring from all the times I've visited.

Try this site - it's got loads of really helpful reviews

well guildford's only about 30-40 mins on the train from london, so while it may not be a city, you're not isolated either.

^^^ Linkage for Surrey uni

As you can see, there are plenty of people who disagree with me!

Are you actually kidding?

Guildford has got to be one of the worst places in the south for snobbery.

So many of the private school boys there are so judgemental if your not wearing abercrombie and go to state school. My friend actually got punched for it.

Ok well my point of "never come across a snob" was admittedly limited to my school (and randomers in town) where you'd undoubtedly expect many snobs to be but I've yet to meet one.

I've probably just been lucky not to encounter any. For the record, I'm a private school girl and I couldn't care less if someone I met came from private or state school and I'm sure I could say the same for almost all of those in the boys school down the road.

The "Abercrombie" group you speak of only consists a handful of people per year so they're really the minority. They're the ones that looks like absolute idiots anyway with their flip flops in winter and terribly bleached blond hair so more fool them. Really sorry to hear about your friend though, that is ****** up. Was he really actually punched for not wearing Abercrombie?

Well yer to be honest I may have only met the bad few. As I have a number of private school friends from Guildford(guildford high girls), and in fact used to go to one.

Well. Not exactly.
My friends are in 'indie' bands and do, i admit, dress a lot different to the majority. I think some preppy boys just made a comment about there clothes being from charity shops, and one of my friends told them to F Off.. and one thing led to another.

I actually do like Guildford and go out there quite a lot

I forgot to add Loughborough is 1 of my choices also, i'll see if i can get down to Guildford and have a look round but it's slipping down my choices list at the moment hehe. Well i'm quite a typical northern lad, likes his sports, fashion all that bladibla! anyway it's off the point! cheers for the replies!

I have lived in guildford for ages now....it's a really aesthetically pleasing place and although there are a large proportion of rahs here there is equally as much normal people. Its fun enough place.....plenty to do.

However, guildford will not even slightly compare to any big city in terms of night life. There are some good bars etc. but only really 2 decent clubs and I'm sure after 3 years here you would be bored out of your mind!!

Nevertheless, I'm here so it's madness.

haha amanda, cheers. I dont think the nightlife will be a problem i'd visit back home enough to get smashed at most weekends anyway hahaha. I just want to go to uni to get a good degree from a good respected uni, and come out with a good enough job, anything else like socially is a bonus of course! As i said i'll go to Guildford maybe next week and have a nose around

thanks for your reply

Guildford is sick
I've lived around Guildford all my life and I love it!

The high street is really old and cobbled, it's really beautiful. Hardly any pikeys or chavs around, but there are a lot of teeny bopper scenesters.

If you're into clubbing then Flares, Bar Mambo, Harpers, Dusk, Bar Med and Wetherspoons are the places to be. (Although the guys in Bar Med can be a little creepy.)
If you're more into the alternative scene there's Farenheit 55 (which is over 21s as of the 25th), the Plantation, Royal Oak, the Legion or the Star (which is my local).

The people are nice, and there are loads of sport stuff to do if youre into that, plus you're on a direct train line to Waterloo and Gatwick.

Are there many snobs at the university?

Are there many snobs at the university?

We've got quite a wide spread i'd say. Unfortunately there isn't a socialist society atm whilst there is a conservative one but there are quite a lot of lefties that i've come across.

Surrey is a good uni mate, but guildford is a poor poor town. Full of snobs who are gonna hate you because you're a scouser. Im a brummie and i get it bad enough. Also the fact that kids from "aldershot" and "farnborough" bowl around the town acting all that does my head in and it'll do your head in. You sound like a city boy like me in which case i'd say go to a city uni. The course at Surrey meant a lot to me, so i have to put up with Guildford for now and it's lack of clubs, southern snobbishness, overpriced drinks, overpriced food, i swear now NO CHIPPYS ANYWHERE!!! (theres rumours that theres some hiding, but its like a treasure hunt). Your call man, your call. It's a very different culture down here mate, and it'll hit you hard.
