Studyboy: To be frank, I've spoken to more Britons than asians but strange enough, all my 'better' friends are asians(or non-caucasian). I tried my best to befriend with them, they're in fact all very friendly but somehow I just can't keep the conversation flowing..i.e; we run out of topic easily. Still trying to work on that. Besides, I find the brits talking too fast especially in a group. So far, I haven't experienced any complication in a one on one discussion with a Briton. By the way, I'm the only Malaysian along my corridor too!There are three guys from China but strange enough, there aren't many Malaysians in my Hall this year. Ironic as it sounds, my Hall boasts to accommodate 40% of my University's international students.

Bristol's a beautiful city, the weather's lovely for a Malaysian but rather humid. Well, I'm only here for a week so things could change a lot in the next FIVE years.

Gosh, you are so spot on Eru Lawliet! Especially the highlighted...sometimes I do feel bad about it lol..but the bigger picture should be having a fun time at uni, just like you said.

It's lovely as long as it doesn't rain. Other than that, I really have no reason not to say so. I hardly sweat here!

I think it's fine really..we just need some time. I'm more getting on track now and weirdly, I find it even easier to make friend with Americans! Some of the regional British accents are really killing me.

Studyboy:I just talked to an Irish girl..i found these Welsh and Irish girls having ''special'' sort of names..they're just so different from the normal English names like Mark, Joe, Lucy and Sophie.LOL!

Oh gosh, i thought I was the only weirdo who couldn't mix with locals. lol. I've no asians in my flat, so I get hesitant about cooking certain things (ie bak kut teh) which I probably won't attempt yet. It's harder to speak to the 1st year Scottish (I've 2 in my flat, and they're not too sociable- maybe it's just their personality, i don't want to stereotype), but the Irish are very friendly and make an effort to befriend you. And I've been talking to international students mostly too, from Slovakia, Poland and even Brazil. Lots of Africans too. They're more open minded and I guess we're all in the same boat seeing we left home.

But hopefully it takes time. I felt really lonely in my 1st week. I still feel homesick off and on, but not as bad. Hope you're all doing better =)

@ Adel: Yea it's not only that is it extreme, but rather it's also very risky. I have a friend (yes it's anecdotal, but it's a relevant one though) who applied for three subjects at the LSE and he got rejected for all of them, and his grades were quite good by any standards! Applying to more subjects at any one school doesn't necessarily increase the chances of one being admitted is the point I am trying to make. When one is applying for more than one subject in which the nature of the subjects are very similar in nature, there is a high probability the admissions tutors will exchange information among themselves and fall under the dangerous impression thinking that even if the applicant is rejected from one's department, there is always a back-up for him in another similar department. This may then prompt the admissions tutor to make some harsh and marginal decisions, and imagine the damage that can be done when all admissions tutors should think so! Diversifying one's choices is always the safer bet I'd say.

By the way kim I am just voicing my opinions and I am not trying to criticise your decision. You decide what is best for you and all the best for your application.

It is quite hard to sustain a conversation, that is about it. But I am trying very hard to penetrate the communication barrier! I feel homesick almost every single morning! I hope when lecture starts, it will keep me from thinking about home too much...

That's normal actually. I felt like that too and now that my course's started I feel SO much better. I made more people of similar interests and basically it's just easier to make friend with those on your course(well you will be sitting beside SOMEONE anyway, like it or not, and that's a great opportunity to make new friends!).

Give it a couple of weeks and you'll be all fine.
