Simpson's Diversity Index???!

Ok, I'm really struggling with this :frown: I don't know how to calculate this even if they provide me with the formula :s-smilie:

If anyone has done question 4 (b)(i) on the specimen paper below, could they please provide a step by step format? Thanks.

formula is D= 1D = 1-(Σ(n/N)^2) (Σ means 'sum of')

so you do

32/196 = 0.1633
78/196 = 0.3980
86/196 = 0.4388

all the others are 0 so 0/196 = 0

then square these

0.1633^2 = 0.02667
0.3980^2 = 0.1584
0.4388^2 = 0.1925

(0^2 is 0)

Then add these together

0.02667+0.1584+0.1925
=0.3776

Then take this from 1

1-0.3776
=0.6554

So the simpsons diversity index is 0.6554
