A* at A level question thread

Thank god for that, I can aim to get a very high score on C3, which allows me to get a mark lower then 90% on C4, which looks really hard.

EDIT: I was gonna post a thread but I'll just say it one here.

Basically, Im considering swapping around my modules.
Currently in Maths I have 289/300 and in Further Maths I have 253/300. I wanna swap D1 from Further Maths with S1 from Maths, which will mean i have:
Maths- 271/300
Further Maths - 272/300
Swapping modules will allow me to get 70% minimum in Further maths modules to get an A.

Phew. What about Further Maths? Do you need 180/200 on FP2 and 3? What about if you are only doing one of them?

For further maths you need 270/300 out of your best three A2 modules (FP1/S1/M1/D1/NM count as AS modules).

Cheers. I wanted to know the same. What about If you retake any AS/A2 units would that make a difference ?

Doesn't matter.

How does the A* work for Further Maths A2 then?

For Further Mathematics, A* will be awarded to students who have achieved a grade A overall (480 UMS or more) and 270 UMS or more on their best three A2 units (whether pure or applications units).
i have an A already in maths but i want to make it into an A*
could i jst retake c4 in jan and achieve an A*
c1 94
c2 95
c3 85

You would have to get at least 95 though. Better to retake both in my opinion, i.e. C3 and C4.

I've got a question. In my chemistry and biology, I have a practical skills assessment worth 60 UMS out of 300 for my A2. Does this count towards the A* or is it just the actual written external exams that count towards the A*?

It also counts, the average of all three of them should be greater then 90..
I've made a...passable spreadsheet telling you if you'll be getting an A* or not.

Okay sorry i dont understand. Some people say you need an average of 80% overall and 90% in c3 and c4. So in AS maths I can get in the three modules C1: 80% , M1: 60% C2: 80% and then in A2 get for the three modules I can get S1: 90% and in C3: 90% and C4: 90% and still get an A* for A level Maths?

Thank you again

I need to get an A* for Maths (Edexcel) and i am currently in my second year of A levels. The modules that we have done and going to do are;

Core 1, Core 2, Core 3, Core 4, Statistics 1, and Mechanics 1.

I am a bit confused because some people say you need an overal 90% to get an A* and some say you need 90% UMS on each module.

These are my UMS by percentage so far;

C1: 95
C2: 84
S1: 89
So far thats 89.33%

Please help me.

you need an average of 90% in C3 and C4 and an average of 80% over the other 6 modules you do, so seen as you've not done C3 or C4, you dont know, but if u get a ums of 90 in them you should get ur a*

90% aggregate between c3 and c4 and an A for the course will get you an a*.
I made a thread about this recently:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=23242860

you need 80% overall (AS + A2) but 90% in your A2
no
you need above 90% in both c3 and c4
not aggregately
Can an A* be achieved with resits?

C1: 95
C2: 84
S1: 89

seeing as you need 180 in C3 and C4, let's assume you get 90 in both
C1: 95
C2: 84
C3: 90
C4: 90
S1: 89

meaning you would need 32 in M1.

GET 90 IN BOTH ! Problem solved
Does it not matter what you get in the applications then? Provided that you can average 80%?

not true, you can get 95 and 85

Anum, thank you for your reply, but what do you mean by the other 6 modules is that including C3 and C4 or excluding because i am only doing 6 modules including C3 and C4 if that made sense.

so from what i understand i need 90% average UMS from C3 and C4 and an overall 80% UMS from C1, C2, S1, M1. And these UMS could be average so it doesn't necessarily need to be 90 or 80 UMS on each. so i could get 95 on C3 and 85 on C4

Yes.
Basically, for 6 modules, you need at least 480/600 UMS (which is 80% overall) and at least 180/200 UMS in C3-4 (which is 90% average).
