Joint Honours offers at Royal Holloway

Hi Everyone

I'm looking to apply for English and French in the Joint Honours Scheme, but can't find any specific offers for this particular combination - however, straight English is AAB and French is ABB-BBB.

Therefore I was just wondering if anyone on here takes this course, or somethng similar, and what their offer was? I mean, ABB seems to be a good guess for the offer of this course, but I just wanted to make sure.

Oh and also, how competitive is Royal Holloway in general?

I got an offer from RHUL in Oct... for English and Drama joint hrns...
They offered me AAB. There wasnt much of a difference in grades from straight english or drama (AAB-ABB) so i'd estimate ur course might be ABB?

Dont hold me to that tho :wink:

A friend of mine graduated with Eng/Drama two years ago. She complained quite a lot about the lack of practical modules. On the other hand my former flatmate did the same combination and never mentioned anything of that kind. :dontknow:

RoHo has quite a few productions during the year and I'm sure that they could make up for the lack of practical courses. However, they prefer 2nd/3rd year students although you may get in if you're really good. :wink:

I was obviously worried about the practical side, cos loads of the uni's i was looking at said that if you did joint hnrs, you missed out on loads of practical, but when i went to the open day at RHUL, i didnt get the impression that there wasnt enough practical...

But i did laugh when the 3rd year student said that for their dissertation they'd performed 'Crave' by Sarah Kane - which i did for my AS practical at college! Lol :biggrin:

Im pretty set on firming RHUL as my first choice, but the only thing i was worried about was the night life?! I know Windsor/London are close but it'll probs get quite expensive trecking it there for a night out??

I think this is the most-asked topic on these forums about RHUL, but it's an important one when considering university. There's a society that do coach trips to clubs in Central London and Windsor (Liquid, Vanilla) quite often; you get entry and transport, and queue jump and things for about £20 so it's a good deal if you like clubs. On campus, Medicine has a dancefloor and the Union has a huge one. Union nights are three times a week I think (I only ever go on fridays) and it's like a warehouse club thing. It's a big space anyway, and they sometimes have bands on.

I live with two english students, and they do so much reading they don't really have much time to go out to be honest. Also, on the drama side of things, there're about 4 or 5 plays/shows going on at any one time so if you're constantly rehearsing for these, you'll likely end up socialising a lot with the other people in it and won't even notice that you're not going out of campus every weekend!

Yeah...I only asked because i went to Queen Mary's London which is my insurance and they were quite heavily critisizing RHUL's student union :/
How often do that society organise the trips into london? They would be what i'm looking for.

In terms of the work load: I dont know if i would have to cope with that much practical (4/5 plays) on a joint honours course...but im certainly aware of the reading load...im trying to get hold of a reading list before i get there and do as much as i can!!
So do the drama rehearsals run at the weekends then??

Theres coach trips to clibs in London at least every 2 weeks - plus other societies often run them so in reality theres usually a trip every week.

Any plays which are part of your assessment in drama are usually rehearsed for in lesson time. If you join any societies and do extra curricular plays etc then these rehearsals are sometimes at weekends.
