radiography - good career choice??

ok so I really want to do Diagnostic Radiography at uni but i was wondering if the salary is any good? i have plans to move to australia in the future soo im just asking if anyone knows what the typical salary for a diagnostic radiographer is in their first couple of years.

also where can you go after doing being a radiographer for several years? can you move up in anyway that would increase salary?

In the UK, maybe £20-30k for most I would guess. What do you mean 'where'? as in job position, salary etc.

urm like career wise, is there a step up from normal Diagnostic Radiographer? do you get what i am explaining very badly? :s-smilie:

i mean what sort of promotions can you get from a bog-standard radiographer in a relatively large hospital?

seriously, there is no such thing. at uni you train in many modalities, including trauma, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, theatre imaging - oh, and bog standard GP and orthopaedic stuff!!
When you qualify, and get a job in a large hospital, they usually rotate you in most imaging areas, and after a year or so, you can specialise in one of these areas - or maybe try nuclear medicine, dexa scanning or sonography.
its nothing but very diverse, even whilst at uni! :p:

The pay is ok why not have a look at the nhs website for agenda for change pay scales. I work as a band 6 and have been qualified for about 2 years. Your earning potential depends on how fast you progress in the hospital you work in and the amount of on call you have the potential to do which can make a large difference to your take home pay.

Although currently there are big changes underway with regard to on call arrangements.

If you just in it for earning potential I seriously wouldnt bother as the degree is actually pretty demanding and if your not fully committed to the course chances are you wont qualify anyway.

Also with recent changes senior rads can progress to Consultant Radiographers in a similar vein to Consultant Nurses, e.g. making limited diagnoses, greater clinical responsibility, etc.

I really respect radiographers :smile:

Their course is theoretically challenging as well as the many practical aspects in order to get good quality images. A v. important person in hospital! I'm all for radiologists reporting uncomplicated films, frees up the radiologists for the more complicated stuff...after all, they must see hundreds of films a week and can spot the bad stuff pretty easily I would have thought!

Pay is ok, but you really shouldn't be following the money. If you do that, you're destined to fail. Radiography is something you have to be genuinely interested in to succeed. If you don't have the interest, and therefore the commitment, you won't get through the course.

Oh no I am soooooo 'genuinely' interested. I can't think of anything else I would rather do. I just wanted to know becuase of my plans for the future and where I'll be able to live. My main priority wasn't the money :smile:

Can anyone tell me a little bit about the course, I know what it entails but aside from that. Is there anything super-interesting or not that I need to know first?
