Hi guys - I'm considering speech therapy and have been accepted onto a master's degree for this year.

I am somewhat concerned about career prospects after graduation though. I keep reading conflicting reports. Some say it's easy to get a job while elsewhere I read that in 2006 80% of graduates had not found work within 3 months.

Also, regarding salary - I understand the starting salary is around 20k. I often read that this can quickly rise - how quickly are we talking about though? What would you expect to earn within 1, 2, 5 years of graduation?

2006 was a long time ago! Which university have you accepted by? Each university will have its own employment rate for their SLT course, so have a look on their website.

If you're really concerned, it might be worth sending an email to the admissions tutor for SLT at that university, and they'll send it on to the person with the relevant knowledge. The average employment rate is 90-97% within 6 months of graduation, so I wouldn't be too worried. If you have a specific region or client group in mind, then it may be more difficult to find a job than if you were more flexible.

It depends on the region you are employed in mostly; in some places a SLT's starting salary is as high as £25,000, whereas in others it can dip below £20,000 to approximately £18,000.

A salary rise depends on many factors: the number of days you work and whether that can be increased, how much you are expected to travel in your job (to schools etc.), how much CPD you do, and whether you are planning to do further study at university (such as a MSc or PhD).

Is that applying for new students or reapplying for current students?
I heard today that I won't be getting my NHS ref # until June. First time applyer.

I checked out the application form though. It asks you to provide a tenency agreement to demonstrate your expenses for living - that means you'd have to be living in your university city when you apply for the bursery???!!!
I've been perusing the internet to try to find out when we get our number, and I found a thread on a midwifery forum from last year that said an applicant had received their number by post on 18th May, so it can't be too long now!

I think the best thing you can do is ring the NHS bursary general enquiries line: 0845 358 6655.

I haven't looked at this thread in agess so I only just read your post, but yesss I've firmed Leeds! I was debating between UEA and Leeds but like you said, the location of Leeds is much better. I didn't like how far away UEA is from everything.

Hey

and yay! I was beginning to think I was the only one going to Leeds! and yeahh Norwich was such a nice city but Leeds was much better overall and Yorkshire seems like a nicer area to do placements too

which accomodation have you applied for?
I rang the NHS student grants/bursaries number as I had some general wonderings, and the woman said we should all be getting our letters in the next two weeks for our student numbers. After two weeks, if somebody hasn't received a letter they should ring up as the student numbers can be given over the phone...

I'm glad to hear that. I've sorted everything else out to do with finance, and I'm now just waiting for my student number.

from what i can remember - you only provide tenancy agreements if you have a house at home you pay for as well as somewhere to live in your uni city. may be worth checking though but i know i didnt give tenancy agreements when i applied. good luck!

They ask you to forecast your expenses for the coming academic year, and you have to provide original documents to substantiate your claims, so the tenency agreement is defo for student accommodation. There must be a way around this, as I won't know what halls I get until september i think, and i expect the bursery place are used to this.

On another note... will be abroad for 3 months this summer coming back a week before uni. They ask for passport and driving liscense which isn't going to be possible for me as I need them both. Have no idea what to do about that, will give them a ring 2 morro I think. HOPE they won't be all jopsworth over it...

When I applied last year, I never sent anything about my accommodation and they never asked for it. I can't remember whether I put my rent in the expenses section, but as I hadn't had confirmation of the halls I was in, I don't think I could have anyway.

This is from the NHS Bursary Website:
When applying for a NHS bursary for the first time you will need to send in two pieces of evidence to confirm your identity one of which must include a photograph of yourself - like a passport or a driving licence. We will return your photo id and other documents as soon as they have been checked.

If you are going abroad in the next six weeks and intend to send in your passport to confirm your identity, please delay making you bursary application until you return from your trip.

I don't know how much that helps but I thought I'd post it anyway in case you hadn't seen it.

Hi,
I have just qualified with a degree in speech and language therapy
The job prospects are good RCSLT said that 90% of all who get their degree get a job in a year since qualification. This is good as a few years ago there was a job freeze (in 2006) and since then lots of jobs have been opening up and the situation now is a lot better than it has been

There are many jobs at there at the moment and I have applied for 5 jobs and got rejected from two because they needed someone right away (which I can not as I do not have HPC registration)

Salary- when you qualify you start on band 5 and all jobs on this band is around 20,000+. all the jobs I have applied for start at 21,000 and with the prospect of increasing pay with experience, responsibilties etc. Many people once finished after a couple of years become specialised so the pay increases due to applying for different banding.

Hi,
I just finished my degree at BCU in SLT
From what i remember of my interview (over 3 years now :O)
They do a formal sit down face to face interview with all the typical questions such as why slt, why this uni etc
Then its a group task to see how you interact
And then finally there is a written task to see how you write etc

Well my advice is phone up again and ask if your qualifications would be okay stating the times you done them as they sometimes have time limits I am not sure myself. But you done the right tpye of course before so I dont see much of a problem

Good luck with applying I wish you luck
