Pain in right groin - female

Hi all,

As the title says I've developed a dull ache, sharp pain in my right groin. The pain is making me unable to walk properly. I vaguely remember having something similar (I think) ages ago and it eventually went. But this has just come out of nowhere. I'm not sure whether it's my period trying to go back into a proper cycle or whether it's something more serious.

I know people on here are not Drs, but I was just wondering if any other ladies have experienced anything similar.

Would appreciate mature replies, thanks.

Go for a cervical smear as soon as you can. It's probably nothing but will put your mind at rest. Ask if they will screen you for all STDs as well. I was in the first stage of cervical cancer when I was having pain in that area (it came and went, sometimes sharp, others dull), and I ignored it until my smear showed something was wrong. Naturally i'll never ignore signs like that ever again, and I strongly advise other girls likewise.

I'm not old enough though, which what I'm going to be told. :-(. I had a full STD check 3years ago, which showed Chlamydia (but I was treated immediately) and I haven't been sexually active since.

:-( now I'm frightened.

CC is caused by the HPV virus, which can fester in your cervix for years before you show any symptoms. They don't test for it at a "full screen" either, you're only tested if you have a cervical smear which comes back abnormal. If you;re showing sypmtoms they *should* give you a cervical screen - I've met girls as young as 22 who have had advanced CC, and the fact they've raised the minimum age of screening to 25 has angered me immensely. Don't let a doctor tell you you can't have cancer before you're 25.. I'm 26 and I don't know how long I had it before they found it.

I don't mean to frighten you at all obviously, but you can understand why it's something I'm so conscious about. Tell the doc you're having these symptoms and specifically ask for a smear. I'd be surprised if they say no, but if you persist I think you'll get one anyway.

You see the thing is I've been unwell for about 5/6weeks, and I've been back and forth to the Drs, fed medication and kinda not thought much more about. IF I go back again, I feel im just going to be told ''You've pulled a muscle'' or something, which is not possible as I haven't done my regular form of exercise for 3weeks!!

I'm just so frightened, fed up and completely had enough of feeling aches and pains all over my body :frown:. Im only 24, I have my whole life ahead of me, and right now im just in and out of Drs offices, blood tests taken left right and centre and I just want to be better, that's all I ask. IF I was to get an appointment with a Dr, would I be referred immediately for a cervical smear or would I have to wait months??? .
you're probably just ovulating.

I'm thinking it might be that, but not sure, as I have just come off the pill after 6 yrs and currently playing the waiting game for when my period will return. :/
I understand that the other poster has had a tough experience with CC but she was more likely to come across other sufferers making it seem alot more common at a young age than it actually is. I wouldn't be too worried about that, but a smear is good if you want to set your mind at ease, especially if you smoke and had a young age of sexual debut.

I don't smoke, and my ''sexual debut'' (cute way of saying it lol) was 18. But I think I will get my butt to the Drs (AGAIN) and have it looked at. Or I might just bring it up in conversation tomorrow with Dr (I'm going to out of hours at my local hospital for the other issue that is going on), and see what s/he says.

 it's just one thing after another with me at the moment, all before xmas :frown:.
I always get paisn in my ovaries, right and left.. :frown: i'm only 17 though :frown: And i've had the CC jab :/

There's a huge list of differential diagnoses for right groin pain. Consult with your GP directly about this, who can take a full history from you and examine you where necessary - that's the only way you'll get the answers you're looking for!

Doctors DO say no to people under 25 requesting cervical smears... just for the record..
I was having SERIOUS problems down there and still wasn't allowed one. I was referred to a gynae under the 2 week suspected cancer rule and STILL didn't get a smear, due to being under 25.

The right area of your groin - it could be a multitude of things! Could be gynae, could be surgical (appendix etc), could be lower gastro, could be an exercise injury or something... go see your GP and see what (s)he thinks.

I prob. won't get one NOW anyway because im 25 February 28th. So if they feel I'd need one, I'd have to wait until then.

I know for a fact it's not exercise injury as I haven't done any for the past 3weeks because I can't at the moment, due to being unwell anyway. Ho hmmm, I will mention it to mum tomorrow, as she works in the medical profession (although not Dr, but Midwife, might have an idea) and see what she says. Like I said in previous post, I am going to out of hours tomorrow for the other issue I am having problems with, so I will prob. bring it up then, as I'll have to give every detail of what has been happening.

Thank you for your post, it is much appreciated.

I really wouldn't worry these pains happen sometimes and seeing as CC takes on average 10 years to develop i wouldn't put you particularly at risk. In addition to this it's quite common to have these symptoms when coming off the pill. TRY to enjoy your holidays

What happened when you discovered you were in first stages?

could be several reasons for your groin pain. Put it throught the symptom checker on the webmd website. Always good fun trying to work out what the problem could be.

I agree that the OP should also bear in mind that her pain can be caused by a mulitude of things, and CC is pretty rare in young girls. I didn't "make out" it was common at all, I said I'd met girls younger than me whose cancer were much more developed than mine - because I visit online support groups and went to a CC conference a few months ago. Of course, if a friend, relative or any other girl told me they were having those kinds of pains down there, instinctively I'm going to say, "Have a smear and check".. I'm living proof that it really can happen to anybody.

As for the 10 year thing - If you say that's the average, i'm sure that would be the case for some women but sure as hell not for me or others i've met. It can develop over as long as 25 years or be very quick indeed. The reasons are complicated but it comes (in very basic terms) down to how your body copes with the HPV, and the strain of HPV you've been exposed to.

I'm shocked and disgusted that girls under 25 are flatly being refused screening. The trust I'm a regular at took a petition to Downing Street opposing the increase in cervical screening age - they were reliably informed that girls under 25 showing symptoms of CC would be screened anyway, without question!

i wasn't saying that you made it seem that way, i meant that the op might think that it's really common in young females.

an Average means for MOST not all women. I'm sorry that you had to go through that and i'm glad you've come out of it well.

A lot of scientific papers stress that its important to note that around 97% of CC are caused by HPV, in particular strains 16 and 18. WE must understand that HPV is very common infection but getting CC is an uncommon outcome of this infection this is because most (~90%) of hpv infections will clear up spontaneously. furthermore there are a whole multitude of other factors like smoking, sexual debut, susceptibility and how effective that person's immune system is. What i'm saying is CC is multifactorial and while HPV seems to be important it often coincides with other risks to cause CC. So op even if you have been infected with HPV doesn't mean you will get CC.

i'm guessng you had cervical dysplasia or CIN?

HPV is ubiquitous in the sexually active population and yes, I know that an infection with a high-risk strain does not necessarily mean you will get the cervical changes that lead to cancer. You have to be terribly unlucky by all accounts to become affected. I think we're digressing from the point really, groin pain is a symptom of a cervical abnormality, and I don't think it should be ignored (but of course I will think that).

I had extensive CIN 3 with micro invasion at the transformation zone. I had surgery in September and the borders came back clear (according to my specialist). This came after a normal smear just 3 years previously.

I had shooting pain in my groin, sometimes just briefly, other "attacks" went on for as long as half an hour. I had dull aches too but I assumed it was down to being too "rough" in the bedroom, so never bothered my GP about it.

I don't want the OP to worry unneccessarily, but something wrong with my cervix wasn't something I'd even entertained when it was happening to me. That is all.

UPDATE: I was aiming to go to the out of hours this evening, with regards to my chest and obv. with the intention of bringing up the groin pain. However talking to the Dr on the phone, he didn't sound too fond of me being another patient to add to his 1 hour waiting list, and firmly told me to go see my Dr tomorrow (I've been given the run around for the past 5/6wks, back and forth). So didn't get the bottom of the groin pain.

However what I have now noticed is the pain is now in the left side and I have lump in my lady flap on the right side. When I feel it, it's the size of a small small bouncy ball, and v v painful. And the left side, I also have a pea size ball but within the creases of my lady flap (if that makes sense?).

I've absolutely no friggin idea what is going on. But after being fobbed off tonight with trying to see a Dr, my mum is putting her foot down tomorrow and demanding someone see me immediately at the Dr surgery. :frown: :frown: I'm convinced it's my period trying to regulate, but to be on the safe side and taking on board the advice here, I'm having this checked out.
