Life never seems to treat us poor naive little mathematicians fairly :frown: Ah well, we're just too awesome for people to deal with  But yeah Warwick is supposedly the best uni after oxbridge for maths. And that's the same offer I have, but it just seems like it's not worth all the extra STEP work just for Warwick when I could go to Imperial or Durham instead and not have to go through STEP. Yeah STEP is like A-level maths, but much harder because it's more spotting tricks and using clever methods rather than just repeating formulae you've practised, I don't know anyone who would do STEP unless they had to...

But Durham is very nice, I heard back from castle just over a week ago, it's such a nice college, but really competitive. But for your friend it might as well be an offer, it means your department wants you and just needs to find you a college to live in, though track takes a couple of weeks to update. Best of luck to him castle is so nice, I'd feel really bad if he didn't get a place at castle because of me, even though I'll probably reject it if I get an offer from Cambridge.

Which Cambridge college did you apply to? And I see you're going for medicine, best of luck

Well STEP is supposedly the closest thing to degree level maths; presumably people are applying for maths degrees because they enjoy it, so one would expect people who are applying for maths to like step. I'd expect that. If you wanted to do maths for 3/4 more years, and yet couldn't be arsed doing an extra paper that's close to what you'll be doing, it would strike me as a little odd.

It's always mathematicians who're left till last. It's silly! :P STEP sounds lovely.... I mean it's not like FP1 isn't fun enough! :P haha.
Well he's heard on UCAS he has an offer. Just doesn't know what college yet. He said they send a letter in a couple of weeks? Something like that anyway. But fingers crossed you both go to Castle! ( ignoring Cambridge that is)

Cambridge - I've applied Christ's . I think I was the first person interviewed too, back 23rd November, which was an AGE ago. Not too hopeful but oh well! :P How about yourself?

On second thoughts, that sounds a bit pervy, but oh well, you know what I mean

I honestly hadn't thought of that till you pointed it out. Then I lol'ed. Literally

I'd definitely agree that STEP papers are far closer to university exam papers for maths then any alternative I know of (at least in terms of style of question and not content). I'm not saying that STEP isn't fun, I sure enjoy the challenge of the questions and the satisfaction when you complete them. But if I don't get a Cambridge offer then to go to Warwick I'll have to not only take a 3 hr STEP paper in the busiest week of my A2 exams, but I'd also have to go through months of preparation to do an exam for a uni I don't wish to go to particularly more than Imperial or Durham. As such I would question if the commitment to STEP would be worth it when I could do other things with my time and still go to a great uni like Imperial. Also STEP is not representative of uni maths. It is essentially representative of uni exams. You don't need to learn any extra content from a maths/further maths A-level, you just have to do a lot of past paper practice to learn technique. What I look forward too at uni is exploring new topics in interesting areas of maths, not the exams I have to do at the end. This is why although I enjoy some STEP, I would question your assumption that a potential maths student should enjoy STEP (well the exam part at least), just as I would question if a potential philosophy student should enjoy philosophy exams as opposed to debating with others in a non-examined situation.

Tell me about it, last year I finished my exams a week after study leave ended, damn FP1  Don't get me started on FP1, thankfully it's done for me  Yeah my letter arrived after a couple of weeks, just before Christmas. I got my place at castle, hopefully Cambridge will have come to the same decision

Christ's is a really nice college  I applied to Trinity, I really hope I get in, it's just such an amazing college  23rd!!! That's ridiculously early, and I thought waiting from the 6th of December was bad... Well you never know, I bet you did better than you think you did, but best of luck anyway  only 7 days left to go :s-smilie:

The beaches in Egypt were amazing, with all those fish in the sea, you won't find that kind of aquatic life in Spain

Go to Egpyt, where the seas have fish! Book today!

This travel plan may include Cholera, Autocracy and Human Rights violations by the camel-load. Also, don't bring your wife as 91% of women in Egypt have had their genitals mutilated.

Just being nosy, you're the first person I've seen with a similar political grid thing to me  Apparently I'm Gandhi. Not a bad comparison, though having studied him a bit last year, I think he's overrated  But it makes me feel nice to see a fellow lefty libertarian

I did it again a few weeks back, I used to always be super hard left and libertarian but I thought I'd try and do sensible, realise that ya know socialism's not great in application.

Still got -7 left and -6 libertarian. Somehow.

EDIT: On the whole Friedman thang...

Proper uncontrolled market works great for some products. I want full competition when I'm looking to buy a TV, and the state backs me up a little bit by making it the law that there's at least a one year guarantee on it, so s'all good.

When I want a policeman, do I want the freemarket? Nooooooooo. When my arm breaks do I want a free market hospital? HELL NO. Education? Nope, the profit incentive is far too dangerous and involves trying to turn everything into numbers (which as we can see in terms of A-Level's love affair with inflated grades clearly isn't the case)

There is plenty of economic argument against what I said. There is, however, no moral argument whatsoever.

Somehow  Sometimes it's nice to be a bit idealistic though

The moral argument against it is that your concern is from the position of the consumer, not the worker. I can't really go into it more than that because I've got homework to do and this is an argument that would last hours.

"comrade". fitting :yep:
the political spectrum thing isn't designed to suggest what works in application!
socialism will inevitably fail until every single person within a community wholeheartedly believes in the concept and commits to following it honestly and selflessly.

it's natural for people to be selfish and to fight for 'survival' at the expense of others, and a shame that unlike capitalism/ general right-winging, literally EVERYBODY has to be on board with the idea for it to be successful (meh, economically so anyway)
:ninja: I feel out of place now politically
