off-campus accomodation

Heys,

I would like to know how hard is to get an off-campus accomodation in birmingham.

I would study in Edgbaston Campus, so I would like to have an accomodation resonably near the campus, like a walking distance.

And more or less how expensive is a room in Edgbaston area?

And is it a safe area ? like with crimes or violence?

Hi, I'd recommend you look at the University's Hospitality and Accommodation Services website which should have most of the information you may be interested in.

Prices range hugely based on the standard of the rooms, such as whether they are ensuite etc, and whether it is catered, so it's best to check on the accommodation website.
With regards to crime, I would say it's a good area of the city, quite safe for students. The halls themselves generally have excellent security that there's never normally any crime in the halls.

Also have a look at the Guild SHAC website - this is an initiative set up by the Guild of Students to find rooms in houses whose landlords are decent! You can find housemates on it, too.

If you want to be around the majority of students, go for Selly Oak or Selly Park. The campus may technically be the Edgbaston Campus, but you're right on the doorstep of Selly Oak. You will find a few students in Harborne and Edgbaston, but not as many, but they're still walking distance to campus. Edgbaston is likely to be more expensive.

You'd have to get the train in from Bournville and I have to say I'm not sure where Moseley is, but I don't know anybody living in either of those two places.

@*soph* yes I would like to be arround students. It will be my first time in birmingham so I want to make friends and have a good social life.

I'm looking at the accomodations off campus because they seems to be cheaper than in campus.

I'm not living in uk right now so problably I will not have the oportunity to visit any house before I apply for one. In your opinion is it safe to see a house in the internet and arrange everything over the internet? Like deposit etc... I'm talking about that houses that are in the university website or maybe the one you told me.

In that case, I would advise finding housemates who need another person to fill their house. If for example a group of 4 students have signed for a 5 bed house, it must mean the house is nice enough to warrant going to the trouble of finding a fifth person, instead of going for a four bed house.

I don't have an offer from birmingham yet so I'm just looking arround everything to get everything ready. As soon as I got my offer I will do all contacts to get a house.

Around the Metchley Lane area. A very expensive hall of residence has been opened up there too so it must be quite a popular place, though from my experience it's mainly medics there because it's a five minute walk to the QE or to the med school.
