I want to hear something from Keele, i'm kinda upset people are putting Keele down at the end as a safety, Keele is my first choice!

I know :frown: Keele's my second (after UEA) but still, it's not getting enough appreciation...

Can you guys give me reasons why Keele is amazing? I felt good about putting Keele down at the time, and then I had a happy dream about Keele and that influenced me more than it really should have :innocent: But I've heard many, many horor stories about it since. :p:

The word-for-word reaction of one of my friends when I told her my choices:

"OMG KEELE! WHY KEELE? WHY? NOT KEELE!"

People have said that keele is not a good medical school but hey-ho, I'm putting it down as my 4th choice, last minute decision :colondollar:

23: 1 application to offer ratio, "easy" eh? :p:

Don't say that! *shudder*

And I'm pretty sure that's just because they were giving out AAB offers last year (well, that's what I keep telling myself anyway!)

Some people think less of Keele because it's often the lowest on league tables, but that's mainly because it's not very research intensive compared to others, which is a big factor in league tables. Also the fact that it's a small place that very few people know of, so they assume bad university.

Last year they had only AAB for entry requirements, low GCSE requirements and little use of the UKCAT, so lots of people applied there.

Ahh yay, they all sound good. Except the small village part... is there enough to do?

Thanks for the insight. Ah, that's fine, I'm not even vageuly researched in the research side of things. This is such a relief to read!

Hope you two are right on the competitiveness thing! 23:1 is actually crazy.

E.g.?

- In the middle of nowhere which will be a shock to the system for me after having lived in a big city my entire life.
- You need a car to get round/have fun (coming from a Keele student)... I do not have a car.
- Deanery has a bad reputation, apparently??
- Watched this Youtube video on life as a Keele med student and a girl on there said she left campus once every two weeks. :erm:
- Said girl considered an exciting day out to be a walk in the fields. :erm:
- Also heard bad things about Stoke from people who have been there.

This has come from teachers who have helped me with UCAS and friends so I was worried. :p: But my fears have been soothed now, woo Keele!

Edit: also heard the course was bad but that was based on 2 people my friend had spoken to who went to Keele and hated it. But 2 isn't a representative sample size and that.

The course so far seems really good. It is a good blend of pbl, lecs and labs (incl dissection). I love dissection - seeing it in the text book is good but actually seeing it in the cadaver just seems to make things fall in to place easier (at least for me). People have qualms about the quiet almost 'rural' like lifestyle; if that is the case then why apply to somewhere like Keele knowing full well what the surrounding area is like. I love it here, yes it is a bit quiet but there is still plenty to do. And it is cliche but at the end of the day we came to get a degree. It is what you make of it at the end of the day. With regards to the positioning of Keele in the league tables, they count for squat as every course is GMC regulated. And besides, the head of school told us in the first week that she has a deal on with a current 2nd year, that by the time said student graduates, Keele will be in the top 5 (or was it 10?!) in the league tables - for those who base decisions on league tables. That kind of determination and drive by the school is what makes it really good. I don't know if Kinkerz has anything else to add?

This may be true. If you're used to Birmingham/London/Leeds/Manchester/etc., then you may find it a bit... quiet. But it's hardly in the middle of nowhere: a short bus ride brings you into varying districts of Stoke-on-Trent. Whether you consider that an advantage, however, is up to you! It's got character. I've grown to really like it.

- You need a car to get round/have fun (coming from a Keele student)... I do not have a car.

I guess that depends on how used to having a car/how dependent on cars you are. I and many people I'm friends with manage perfectly fine without a car. The bus service is, on the whole, pretty good and not an absolute steal.

- Deanery has a bad reputation, apparently??

A deanery nearby certainly does; it's been in the media. It's often confused with ours, which is actually pretty reasonable. It's one of the busiest hospitals in the country and Stoke-on-Trent is at the bottom of almost every health index (number of smokers, etc., etc.), so you'll see a lot of patients! It has a particularly good reputation in trauma, I'm led to believe, and I was in theatre with some urologists the other week who told me that the case they were doing had been referred from Birmingham because only they were sufficiently qualified/specialised to do it. These are just examples, though.

People leave campus at a massively diverse rate! But Keele is one of those places where you don't really need to leave if you don't want to.

I'm sure some people would consider that an exciting day out. There are other things to do...

It's nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. Particularly in the areas local to Keele. Having said that, aesthetically it's not the most pleasant place in the country.

also heard the course was bad but that was based on 2 people my friend had spoken to who went to Keele and hated it. But 2 isn't a representative sample size and that.

You'll meet students from all schools who say their course is dire. Equally, you'll meet students from all schools who swear blind that it's the best one in the country.

The course sounds really good. The main reason I picked Keele was because it's PBL, tbh, but the course does sound nicely blended. I didn't even realise Keele did dissection, that's really good.

I'm not going by league tables in any way at all. The student satisfaction bit would be the only potentially relevant bit and I remember seeing that rural-y areas seem to have high student satisfaction?

The thing about applying to med school is that you apply where you think you stand a chance, where you "want" to go is kinda secondary to that. :p: I don't mind the idea of a rural life style as long as there's enough to do... and from what you've said there is, so yayyy.

Can I just ask- what's the nightlife like? And are there many political/charity campaigns or events or whatever going on?
Just want to say thanks for being honest in your answers

Character is probably the most important things in a place. Wait, so is Stoke not a single town? Is it lots of smaller towns?

I guess that depends on how used to having a car/how dependent on cars you are. I and many people I'm friends with manage perfectly fine without a car. The bus service is, on the whole, pretty good and not an absolute steal.

Ah good. I was worried about the bus service being rubbish (that's what the car thing seemed to imply) but if it's reliable then I don't really understand why cars are needed... actually, he might of meant for night life. What time's the last bus? :p:

That's really good! I assumed that because it was fairly rural there wouldn't a wide range of patients compared to Glasgow or Liverpool or something but apparently not. This is also good interview stuff for if I get one. :awesome:

Ooh, I guess the campus is like a small town in itself... a student village esque thing, which is quite cool.

I'm sure some people would consider that an exciting day out. There are other things to do...

That's definitely a relief. :p: Not that picnics and that aren't fun but erm, British weather isn't exactly great for that.

It's nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. Particularly in the areas local to Keele. Having said that, aesthetically it's not the most pleasant place in the country.

I google imaged Stoke to start with and thought "wooow, that's so pretty". But what they showed on the Youtube video looked quite plain so I was bitterly disappointed haha. :p:

You'll meet students from all schools who say their course is dire. Equally, you'll meet students from all schools who swear blind that it's the best one in the country.

Yeah, that's very true. I just got freaked out because none of the other unis I picked were so instantly criticised. The course sounds really good from what rumandraisin has said.

Apologies for being so presumptuous, guys, I'm really happy about having picked Keele as a choice now.

Yeah, hopefully the AAA thing will put people off. Hasn't Keele always been really hard to get into, though? Cos they are PS focused and allow resits?

Where else you applying?
