Is Alcuin realy unsociable?

Hi I have an offer to study economics at York and I remember at the open day Alcuin college had my favourate accommodation.
Reading posts on here it seems that people in Alcuin have no social life and I was wondering, how true is this?
Would be grateful if someone who had lived in Alcuin could share their experiences?
thanks

I live in Alcuin and I have a great social life, just not really with Alcuin people. That said, a lot of people here do socialise loads with each other, and I have one flatmate whose room I spend a lot of time in chatting. Some blocks are a lot more sociable than others but that's just the luck of the draw I guess and the same with any college. If you're worried about it though, take a look at James, most of the accommodation is pretty much the same as far as I'm aware but it probably has more 'college spirit' if that's what you're after. It's further from some parts of campus than Alcuin, but then much closer to the sports centre if that's your thing. I'm happy to answer any other questions if you want!
Alcuin social life is pretty dire, though I think the current social secs are trying to improve things. It is a bit detracted from main campus, but then so is halifax and they are sociable. It just depends who you end up with, though two of my best friends transferred from alcuin to james because it was so dire. I am in james and it is really sociable, while also having good accomodation. Obviously I am biased, but James is the best compromise. Derwent is really sociable if you want that, but the accomodation is awful.

Thanks for your replies they were realy helpful
So it sounds like James has the best of both worlds if the accommodation is the same and it is also more sociable.
I know that Alcuin is close to economics which is why it seemed attractive to me, It's also strange how one college can attract more unsociable people than others.
Maybe I'll go back and visit again before I firm my offer!

Another little heads up, the Economics department is based in Alcuin but actually all the people that I know that do economics actually have most of their lectures in Wentworth/Physics/Vanbrugh which are on average closer to James. We all got caught out by choosing a college in relation to where our department was based but all that means is that you'll be near to the department reception which doesn't really help much! Alcuin is by no means far from anything but James is probably closer to a lot of stuff. I think if I chose a college again I would go for James, although I think the accomodation in Alcuin is great for the price and I love my room and that.

Alcuin is close to Economics...but I only occasionally have to go there to hand work in. All my lectures are spread out over campus in physics/langwith/wentworth/alcuin. You shouldnt base college on subject unless yyour subject is on hes east really!

It definitely seems one of the quieter colleges from what I know of it (which isn't too much). I'd recommend James for anyone interested in a really social college. I wasn't particularly looking for that, but I've had zero problems regardless - so guess I just got lucky!

I'm in James, and I've had no problem with being either social or undisturbed. If you want to be social, there'll be people up for anything, but if you're having a night in or you're working, you most likely won't be bothered by anybody (unless, of course, your whole block's going out and your kitchen's been chosen for pre-drinks).

A few people I know in Alcuin seem to be doing all right, socially. Their flats tend to do a lot together and go out quite a few times every week.

I'm a third year but was in Alcuin for the first. Based on accommodation I don't think you can find any better at the Uni, but the college is severely lacking socially. Don't be fooled by the Alcuin bar 'B Henry's', the only time anyone uses it is on the very first weekend when everyone is meeting and greeting. Apart from that it's a ghost-town that only has limited open hours and limited drinks. The people are all great, and obviously at every college you'll find like-minded people who you go out with, but Alcuin certainly isn't some kind of party college. A flet of my flatmates and I would go out a fair bit, and obviously you can go out with sports teams/ people from your course, so it's not just based purely on the college. I always loved having a big night out and then returning to my ensuite (which came in very handy in the morning! Imagine running back and forth to the shared toilets hungover). Derwent is probably the best college to join if all you want to do is to socialise, but the accommodation there leaves a lot to be desired, so it depends what you're after.

If I were to reapply again, I'd definitely choose James College. It's the best of both world. The majority of accomm. is very nice and similar to Alcuin standard, apart from the unlucky few who get dumped into one of the older buildings. The social life is good and they have a nice new bar that's been refurbished, plus it's very close to the sports centre and you feel like a part of the Uni, at Alcuin you're well out of the way from the university hub.

Thanks I think I'm decided I'm going to apply to James nicer accomodation if possible.
Alcuin is well out of the way? I thought it was just over a bridge across the road.
Yeah it's over a bridge but then all the buildings you see are departmental buildings like Seebohm-Rowntree building for Social Policy etc. The actual accommodation is further along and right on the very edge of campus. Although technically you're on campus, you aren't really in the 'student bubble' at all, you only see other Alcuinites or people going to the Chemistry/Economics/Social Work departments. Alcuin is pretty much seen as a Travelodge on top of a hill away from everyone.
