I am hopefully going to be a healthcare professional aswell.

Can i ask what did they diagnose you with and under what circumstances? Im running a bit scared if im honest. Anon helps alot here. Can i ask what treatment they say you have to have? I mean how do you treat someones personality?

Can i ask is it the whole how was your childhood crap? I will actually tell them i cant and wont do it.
Hi,

I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality disorder, schizotypal personality personality, and bulimia/binge purge eating disorder. Not exactly a simple case lol. I was absolutely petrified at the assessment, and for the first part of it we just talked about the treatment I had previously had and what had lead to me having that. They knew I was a self harmer and had OD before as that was all in a letter sent by my GP to Occ Health (really thanked them for that one). So they asled about my triggers etc. He then did the SCID-II interview which is a long series of questions which helps them determine the disorders.
The whole assessment took about 1 and half hours. He reccomended to the Occupational Health department hat I had specific treatment tailored at BPD and he said the SPD would go with this as well. The treatment they recommend for BPD is Mentalisation based therapy or dialectal behaviour therapy. And he also recommended that this should be undertaken at a specialist unit not generic mental health services.
Not all areas have specific services targeted at Personality disorders, and if they do there are often long waiting lists. My referal process was complicated by occ health involvement, my change of address between first and 2nd years, which subsequently meant that my GP records got misplaced between surgeries!
Once I was seen at the unit there was guarantee that they would treat me, it was a comitment by me and wether they felt they could help. I ended up having 3 assessment appts at the unit. And I was also seen by the generic CMHT consultant psychiatrist as she apparently will be overall responsible for my care. And she said that I may have a care co-ordinated as I am a complicated case.
I have learnt I have to be honest, or I wont get better and they wont trust me, meaning they are more likely to revoke their decission to let me stay on the course. For me the Unit wasnt right and they decided to refer me to the Eating disorder team.
They are their to help and they will support you. Do not lie it will make the whole situation worse trust me. and as wanna be health care professionals we should know we should lie about. I wont lie its hard but worth it in the end.

My childhood was very mixed, and not something I want to write more about on an open board.

I hope that info is helpful to you.
Do not give in.
If you need any more info then ask.
let us know how you get on

Tell then you would prefer to see your own psychiatrist through your GP. This is a private matter and you would like it to stay private.

Can i ask exactly what you mean by your mental health is deteriorating? What do they say makes you that way?
That people were talking about me, doing things covertly that would provoke me, undermine my value, confidence and provoking me. My sleep patterns were becoming disturbed, I was becoming increasingly agitated and I would ruminate. I was unable to eat or drink to the point where my skin was cracking open due to dehydration. I would have angry emotional outbursts and present to supervision in tears, sobbing uncontrollably after going to lunch and contemplating suicide or harming someone else. Other symptoms too, which I won't go into or I fear this will become a monologue.

It was my friends who told me the truth. I thought they were a part of the conspiracy!!! I had made them scared for their personal welfare :frown: as well as my own. It was only when they explained to me the reality of behaviour that I realised I was unwell. That whatever my warped thoughts and emotions were telling me the reality was that these people, my friends, were only concerned for my welfare and that my behaviour was unreasonable and destructive to put it mildly. They gave me something special those friends. They taught how to look at my psychological condition objectively despite what my thoughts, emotions or inner voice told me. They bestowed upon me the capacity to have insight and I will forever be grateful. That was many years ago and I am now in my mid-40s (sob) and have subsequently been employed by agencies providing support to the most vulnerable in society, a job I would never have been able to do without the intervention of my good friends. I have even received an award at a cermony held at one of the Hilton hotels in London for services to the community presented by a local authority in London. Not bad for a self-confessed nutcase!!

I still suffer from poor mental health and will require support from mental health services 'til I die. I don't consider that to be negative though. It make me who I am. In a perverse way, I relish the daily challenge of debating my inner voices on a daily basis!! It even makes me laugh out loud sometimes when I'm on a train or whatever when I make a joke at the expense of my other voice.

I'm not saying that you are like me. I have not observed you and neither have I observed the actions of those around you. I'm just giving you an answer to the question you asked of me.

Anyhow, it was from that initial moment of clarity that I originally approached services for support and an assessment. The rest,as they say, is history.

Sorry about the length of this post. You were honest in your response to my question so it was only fair that I respected this and gave you a detailed reply to your query.

Thankyou for your reply, really helped me to read your message and im glad that you got the help you need. Thing is im convinced that people are talking behind my back - but ive got evidence they do. Im beginning to wonder if actions people do have a significant meanings. I dont understand why this isnt normal. Then again what is normality? Why do people conform to normality? Im not sure i understand anymore.

Can i ask what did they eventually say that you had? Although it doesnt really matter too much, or i can understand if you dont want to post on a forum. It is alot to ask.

They're not allowed to kick you out just because you may have a personality disorder (mental health acts). I say go ahead with it, you could benefit a lot from a diagnosis.
I did that once - pretending everything was fine. I did it because I didn't want a mental health diagnosis hanging over my head. I don't recommend it, though; if you need help (which I definitely did) then you need to be compliant and truthful so that they can find the best way to help you.

Its not a diagnosis i need though. What they are failing to realise is that there is nothing wrong. Im going to have to lie about everything to make this fesible. I mean how can the accuse the real me of having a personality disorder, in which instance i need to lie and change it so they know i dont have a personality disorder.

Theres no treatment for a personalty disorder so whats the point in diagnosis??

There is treatment for personality disorders. There's a therapy called DBT which I could tell you more about if you want me to.

You don't know what the disgnosis. You are assuming personality disorder, but your opinion is subjective when what you require is the professional and objective opinion of someone trained in mental health. That is what an assessment is, an objective (impartial) opinion.

You asked for my exact diagnosis. I'm afraid I am not willing give that information in this thread (sorry). It may prove unhelpful as it may lead you to drawing incorrect conclusions which could be counter-productive.

I can only advise objectively that it really is helpful to have that professional opinion. You did state something in one of your earlier posts along the lines of 'I obviously have a serious problem', so you realise there is an issue that is causing difficulties (That's not a direct quote as I can't remember but is the gist of your words I think). There really is no harm in being assessed. The worst that can happen is that you receive a report in the post with which you completely disagree. Whilst the best outcome is you formulate an effective plan in partnership with mental health services that supports you achieving your goals. A 'win-win' situation is how I see it

There is a treatment for personality disorders - I am getting DBT which is used to treat Borderline PD, and you need a diagnosis to get on the therapy (well, where I am you need to have one), so a diagnosis can be beneficial in that respect.

Im sorry for asking i know that some people around here could be influenced but in all honesty as i have nothing to worry about as i have no mental illness it would effect me. They have told me i have to see this psychiatrist because they suspect a personality disorder. Which obviously means if i act differently then i definately have no problem, im sure i can become an introverted, quiet little mouse for 20 minutes or however long this crap might take.

I dont even understand why they suspect this. Im a bit bad tempered sometimes and im pretty impulsive but thats me, has always been me and always will be and no stupid psychiatrist is going to change me ever.

Originally my parents caught me self harming and they took me to the Drs, then I got referred to CAMHS (Child Mental Health Services) and they diagnosed me with depression. I 'recovered', then when I got a bit older I started to feel worse again, I went to my GP, who referred me to a psychiatrist and oer the process of a few months they diagnosed me, then took it away again. Then I moved, saw a new Psychiatrist and got re-diagnosed. I wasn't aware I had a PD, to be honest, I had never heard of them before. I just felt depressed and then when I was asked questions they said I fitted the criteria.

Thankyou for telling me!! If its just a questionnaire that they are going to ask then i should be okay! If you tell people what they want to hear then there will be no problems! I hate the fact its within the university department. I dont trust them - do you think they might be recording it or something??

Well not a questionnaire as such. They allow you to describe what has been going on, and they asked questions based on what you and others have said. They will probably catch you out if you lie. How do you mean it is through your uni dept? Surely, it will be done by an NHS psychiatrist? I've never heard of these conversations being recorded, they will take notes, but they must ask your permission before recording.

If you have nothing to lie about, then don't lie. Psychiatrists are not stupid, they're there to evaluate your mental health. If you go in making up stories and they catch you out, they're going to think you do have mental health issues.

Just be straight up and honest.

But im only there because of other peoples perceptions of me. So if people percieve me to have a personality disorder i need to pretend to be someone else in order to pass. That means to show them they can stick their mental illness claims. Shame they are using the psychiatrist when he could be helping someone else that wants/needs it.

It may be that these people are totally in error and you are fine, but what if they have noticed something in your behaviour of which you are not aware? What if their concerns are real and it is illness that prevents you from being able to consider this scenario?

I am being devils advocate here but I do feel it is best to be assessed at face value. When I'm going through a really bad spell I don't possess the capacity to determine whether perceptions have been altered and my judgement impaired...

So the appointment is next week i feel so sick!
If i dont go im in deep ****e with the university. I still dont know what to do. Im so stressed about my exams i might just tell them where to go.
Why cant they even give the time with the psychiatrist to someone who needs it? Thats what annoys me the most.

The sooner they tell me nothing is wrong the better! Im going to ask for a signed statement of that aswell. You never know how these things get might interpreted or twisted.
