Should not aborting mentally/physically retarded children be illegal?

For
- They will have to be supported by the state for their entire lives.
- Incest relationships are illegal to prevent this very thing.
- They will suffer and have a bad life.
- Cause parents to suffer and have a bad life.

Against
- Life begins at conception and it is therefore murder.
- They have a right to life.
- It isn't the state's decision.
- Lots of great people have been retarded.

Lots of great people have been retarded.

Probably the least delicate way you could have put that statement.

I don't understand the political correct nonsense associate with the word retarded. It isn't like retarded people even care it is just their wheel chair pushing families that cry about it. The same people that write into the BBC every week because someone called someone an idiot.
There is more to it than what you are saying though, abortion lowers your fertility chances as it can cause damage to the reproductive system, although it's only a small chance people just don't want to take the risk. Making it mandatory would be unfair for that reason alone

It's a right to have the choice of keeping on a retarded child or not... You can't legislate choice/free will, or else what kind of society would we live in, what would they try legislate next?

If the parents want to keep the child when they find out it has disabilities, then you can't force them to abort it!

PS: Not all physically/mentally retarded children are born through incest.

Forced abortions by the state (which is really what is being proposed) are a horrific idea. The decision is one that should only be made by the parents with input and advice from doctors. The idea that life is granted or denied on economic grounds is also pretty nasty.

that would make an awesome film.

you should have been aborted too. i think you were the reason they invented condoms

the way you put it made it seem like you thought the OP was putting forward a 'pro choice' argument just because it was advocating abortion.

when it was actually the literal opposite of choice.
Well the doctors advising my parents during mum's pregnancy thought that I might've had Down's Syndrome (let's hear it for **** doctors people!)

Suffice to say I don't, so to throw it into the mix, not all diagnoses of mental or physical retardation are correct. And I'd prefer to not be dead.
Reply 13
Yeah your view was clear but the way you put it made it look like 'im pro choice but not THAT pro choice' as if advocating for the OP's idea is a pro choice position.

Oh, I'm sorry I forgot they don't have a right to life.
I do love how all pro-choice people have already been born...

 This has nothing to do with pro choice.

What an absolutely ridiculous comment to make.

Stop trying to be clever, because that comment really wasn't.

Life begins at conception and it is therefore murder.

It's very much debateable when life 'begins'. Some people argue that life begins at conception; others argue that life begins when the foetus is viable, at around 24 weeks gestation.

Being pro-choice doesn't mean that you think all pregnancies should be aborted, just that a woman should have the right to choose what happens to her body.
