How science based is the Birmingham Psychology degree?

Hi, Birmingham is a huge department (500 students) with purpose built facilties for work in brain imaging etc and lots of labs. It is as scientific as any other psychology course. However it is not one of the 'experimental courses'. It would come under a broad based course because their concept is, as they say themselves:

'Because of the wide-ranging nature of psychology, we believe that students should examine all of its various approaches and interests before choosing an area in which to specialise.'

So they concentrate on breadth and lots of different areas.

Last year it said you needed an AS in Mathematics to apply but I can't see that this year. Instead it says they offer AAA to people without a science and AAB if you have a science A level (this can be Psychology, Geography etc... they have a list)

They also do a BSc Psychology and Psychology Practice 4 year course with a year out in placement, which is an applied degree in essence. Sounds good.

Great university and very well respected department.

Thanks a lot, I'm close to firming it
Only just scraping an A in PSYA3 has really hindered my plans to get A*AA/A*AB - so the potential A*AA offer from Bath I'm waiting from will be pointless to accept anyway - anyone know if they offer anything lower, or are they really set on the highest standard of students.

Once I've heard back from them (offer or rejection), I intend to firm Bristol and put York as my insurance (AAA and AAB). My gut feeling is just to firm York, I could happily spend three years there - but it's the whole argument of 'putting the higher offer first, in case I get the AAA' and may feel angry in not firming Bristol. Any advice on this situation?

Your offer doesn't matter at the end of the day, as long as you meet it for the uni you want. If you think you would prefer Bristol, then firm there; if you think you would prefer York, then firm there

I think Bath will occasionally give AAA offers, but don't think it is particularly common. Which of the 3 is your favourite/2nd ignoring the offers just where would you most like to go?

Hi! Looking for some advice from anyone.
Basically, all of last year I was hoping my AS results would be good enough to go to Nottingham Uni (AAB), but I ended up with AAABC, so looked around a bit and found that the course at Bath was AMAZING. So all of this year I've been crazy waiting for an offer from Bath and I have one, but I went back to Nottingham the other day and completely felt at home there. Bath has an amazing course, but so does Nottingham, and I feel like my head's stuck at Bath but my heart's in Nottingham.
I am SO confused! Any advice? Does anyone go to either unis or know much about the departments there? Or is anyone else applying there? ANy help would be much appreciated!

(Oh and I want to go into Clinical Psych eventually - not sure if that makes a difference!)

If you want to go into Clinical psych, then Bath's placement year (I assumed you applied for the sandwich course?) will serve you much better in terms of work experience for your career.

Got an offer for psychology from University of manchester and Keele

Well done! What a levels do you do and what are your predicted grades?

Yeah I got the fake Bristol rejection, then an offer. Definitely not accepting it now!!

Is anyone else applying to Nottingham for Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience? I just wondered if it'll be popular, preferably with nice people on the course... Pretty sure it'll be my firm, though I got really tempting offers from Sussex because I hear it's pretty (for straight Psychology) and Leicester ( Psy and Cogneuroscience) mainly because Leicester's closer...

Bath and Nottingham both have great courses. However as the other poster said the sandwich year will be a plus in applying for clinical later.

However at the end of the day Nottingham is excellent and many people go on to do applied psychology such as clinical following a three year degree. If you think you would be much happier there then choose it. This is three or four years of your life and feeling at home somewhere is as important as anything else.

Bath tend not to offer lower on the whole as they are so sought after.

You have some excellent offers though. York is a really respected department; as is Bristol. However if you really want to go to York then firm it. My daughter firmed Bristol above Durham even though Bristol offered lower because she knew it was where she would be happiest.

Good luck deciding.

I'm at Bath (2nd year) so any questions feel free to fire away or pm me. I also recently did a majorly long post about course structure/content/assessment type stuff and posted a link to where you can find more detailed info on the thread called Bath Or UCL for Psychology in the psych forum if you're interested in that type of stuff. I'm also hoping to go into clinical and one thing I would say is everywhere I've done work exp pretty much everyone has said they wished they'd done a placement year because it's so competetive even to get clinical experience. But equally as catoswyn said you're spending 3 years of your life there so you need to be happy.
Just Firmed Bristol  Insured Royal Holloway  Exciting stuff haha

Is anyone planning on studying Psychology at Sheffield Hallam this year? I'm thinking of putting it as my firm choice, just need the grades! Would be cool to know anyone else that is thinking the same!
