Northumbria uni-- which halls???

hey all! i need some quick advice on which halls are the best. Ive ruled all the quay point/winn studio type buildings out as they are too expensive (£110+).
Im looking for one ranging from around £85-£110. Which is the most modern, nicely sized and social hall? My fav's are Victoria Hall, Camden Court, Stephenson Building and Glenamara. any ideas??

If you're not willing to pay more than £110 then you'll need to rule out Victoria Hall as with the ensuites you can't pick the hall only the room type - Victoria Hall is in the 'city ensuite' category which also covers Quay Point, Winn Studios etc.

I would suggest applying for Glenamara House, Stephenson Building and Classic Ensuite to cover those other choices (Classic Ensuite covers Camden Court and Knoll Court - both of which are under £110pw). Then for a fourth choice either Albion House or Clapham House.

yeah i know victoria hall is in city en-suite... its sooo annoying!! ive done first choice:glenemara Second choice:classic ensuite Third Choice: stephenson and Fourthchoice: city en-suite. i get the impression that although its not the highest standard of accomodation, Glenemara is the most sociable/best.

I don't really understand what StacFace is on about, most en-suites, including Quay Point/Winn Studios/Manor Bank and I believe Victoria Hall are all less than £110 per week

I'm in Quay Point and it's £103 per week

Those are the 2011/12 rates; for 2012/13 a standard ensuite room in Quay Point will be £110.50pw, in Winn Studios will be £112.28pw and in Manor Bank will be £113pw. The 2012 accommodation brochure gives a price range of £107pw - £117.50pw for city ensuite accommodation.

I really would not recommend Stephenson building to anyone. I've lived there this year, its mega quiet and we haven't had hot water for the majority of the year..

It's not good as in really modern etc but it is known as 'the party hall', so it depends if quality or social life is more important to you.

Any views on marleen court? is it for students doing specific subjects? i know it's about a mile away from the east campus but i happily walk two miles to college now so that doesnt bother me, looking for strictly non en-suite and am a bit stuck...

It's not for any particular subjects, anyone eligible for accommodation can apply there. The layout is like a cul-de-sac on a housing estate rather than a typical university hall of residence, so it might have more mature students or students who want a quieter place to live. As for what it actually looks like they have pictures on the uni website, have you seen these?

Yeah i've seen the pics, it looks lovely but like you said im bit worried that it'll be full of mature students and i'll miss out on socialising with people my own age, but i'll apply for it anyway.
Unfortunately when i went to the open day i only saw the lovaine halls (which im not even going to consider) camden court which is too expensive and glenamara which im told is the most "fun" and so it tends to be 'claimed' pretty quickly.

Have you looked at Clapham House and Stephenson Building? These seem to fit what you are going for.

If you like Glenamara House then I would still apply for it as your first choice as the reason you're given four spaces is in case your first choice(s) are already full, and you never know there could still be some rooms left. If you put Marleen as your fourth I think you have a pretty good chance of getting one of your three more preferred choices at this stage, but you could ask in the 'additional information' box to be put with 1st year students under 21 or however you want to define students your own age.

Chocowix, there's not really such a thing as a "quiet" student halls! You choose whether you want to socialise with everyone else or keep yourself to yourself.

The en-suite options are an absolute rip off for next year, the prices have gone up around £15 a week since I was in Quay Point last year so I would avoid them purely on a financial level.

It's very easy in any halls to get to know new people in the first week, let me know if you have questions about specific halls and I'll try and help.

Not true - Lovaine Flats is the 'designated quiet hall' at Northumbria.

Also although you can choose whether to make friends or not there are still halls such as Glenamara which have a rep for parties and noise which means people who want to throw parties and make noise will probably apply there. Therefore if you want somewhere quiet it's a good idea to avoid there because it's less likely you'd end up with quiet neighbours if you did go there.
