Me: "I'm training to be a barrister."
Them: "Oh wow - I love coffee!"
Me: "No no... I am... oh forget it. Yes, I make coffee."

:frown:

Ahahahahaahahaha

Love this.

People often say "What are you going to do? Become a maths teacher?" (they are obviously clueless about what you can do with maths )

I get this almost daily from my friends, who know that I intend to study maths at uni.

Yeah, far too many people think university has to be vocational
Linguistics and Philosophy:

1) 'What languages do you speak' (obvs linguistics  )
2) 'What is it?'
3) a blank look followed by 'what does that lead to'

I've not even got to university yet. *sigh*

Why?

You get to go to McGill!

"Business Studies" sounds worse than "management" or "economics".
I know right! Not that many people know how awesome that is, but as long as we know its cool :P

I do Interior Architecture.

I just get a blank or wtf look. Either that or: "so you decorate bedrooms then?" (which I certainly don't grrr)

Haha, Brazil, China and India have significantly growing economies, so other countries don't exist for now xD
Love this thread, although I'm starting to notice some of the responses would be what I'd say... :argh:

Is it architecture?

Noooooo... but good try.
Oh law, you must be smart.

:ninja: I'm really not, I can just write essays.
I study english literature, typically people are just like "ooooooooo" or a few people "what are you going to do with that?"
On that note, thought this was quite appropiate...

"are you going to be a mechanic"

Mechanical engineering typical response
trying to explain to people that a languages degree isn't just learning to speak the language, and that we don't all become language teachers or translators... sigh :s-smilie:
*sharp intake of breath (same sound a mechanic does before he says 'its gonna cost ya') followed by*...............really? but what about the competition :zomg:

Its funny because I've had this the other way round. I work in a coffee shop part time whilst doing my Alevels and the amount of people that look shocked when I say "I'm a barista"
"surely you aren't old enough!" is a frequent response
"I didn't know you could just do that on saturdays!" was a personal favorite :colondollar:
I tend to be asked while I'm on the train, sketching and they assume I'm doing an art degree of some kind. When I tell them I'm actually studying for a Law degree, they get impressed for all of about 2 seconds and then give me a shifty look before going back to their business.
my response to their response, there was no clip of just "the sigh", but this'll do.
Off to do History and Sports Studies next year, and the usual responses are:

1) What, they actually do that?
or
2) (in a smug voice) Oh wow, that's an interesting choice...
