I'd only originally applied to Bath because I needed another uni! :biggrin: Notts is my insurance, I'm a sucker for a brand new maths building :tongue:
It was annoying for me, as I went to the Bristol open day which was 4 hours getting there and 4 getting back, and then two weeks later got on the exact same trains to go to bath, just got off one stop earlier....:colonhash:

I quite like Notts, but I insuranced Exeter. Do you watch Numberphile on Youtube? Some lecturers from there are on it. Sixty Symbols is pretty good too. :biggrin:

Haha, I've only been on one open day. Was going to go to Exeter but cancelled it after the Bath open day :tongue:

I hadn't heard of Numberphile before, so I've just watched the Numberphile for 69! I had actually worked out a few weeks ago that 69 is the biggest factorial calculators can do, so I'm feeling pretty smug right now :wink: I'll add it to the list of things on the internet that I prefer over revision :tongue:

On a similar note, I love this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIYMmbHik08
the binary palindrome bit <3

Have a look at the one about Graham's Number, that's a good one! I had as well, I always feel smug when they say something I already know :tongue:

Big Bang Theory :biggrin: <3

Wow, ok I definately did not know about Graham's Number.
So basically from what i gathered,
g1 = 3(↑↑↑↑)3.
g2 = 3(g1 arrows)3.
g3 = 3(g2 arrows)3.
.....
g64 = graham's number.
so solution to Ramsey theory is between 11 and Graham's Number....

why 64?

I love the way the people talking get more excited as the video goes on.

I love the whole 'black hole in brain' thing!

No idea, it makes my brain hurt :laugh:

They get way too happy :biggrin:

Saying that, I got really excited when Matt Parker retweeted me :tongue:

According to his twitter page, Matt Parker does maths and stand up ! That I have to see :tongue:

Oh, and you're ruining my days revision, keep it up :biggrin:

Matt and James are my favourites. James has his own YT channel, I ended up making far too many dodecahedra after watching that video :tongue:

Ugh, I'm finishing off my physics coursework (due in tomorrow) and I'm 200 words over the word limit. :s-smilie:

I anticipate many hours watching these people in the near future:smile:

200 words over the limit, meaning you're just too good, correct? :wink:
I've never understand word limits, why not just let people write as much as they feel is necessary, within reason.

If you like physics then look at Sixty Symbols, they're good too. Did something on the vuvuzela a while ago.

Bloody hope so :tongue: I've just referenced the vlogbrothers as a source for my coursework :awesome:

...just realised that the video ends on giraffe sex :colondollar:

I was worrying about being able to reach it a few weeks ago, and now I'm over it! :eek:

You should get extra marks for doing research, or in this case watching educational physics songs :wink: and at the end it only gives a picture of giraffe sex. Really, it depends if the examiner has a sense of humour........ :laugh:

Mmm i watched the sixty symbols answers part one, being a fan of the big bang theory i'm interested to know what string theory is. Sometimes i wonder if i should have done a science subject.

Pfft, I need extra marks. The neutrino anomaly was not a good choice of topic. :frown:

I do physics and most of what we do seems to be 'rearrange this equation, put this number in' or a tiny bit of explanation, so you're not really missing out. Some stuff's pretty interesting though, like time dilation and particle physics. Got any physics books? I quite like 'In Search of Schrodinger's Cat'.

Also this, in case you have sig display off. Vi Hart is brilliant and I love how loads of people are arguing with her :tongue:

I don't have any physics books, i'm a rare breed of mathematician who doesn't have any knowledge of science......:tongue:

I watched vihart 9.999 reasons why .999 is 1, (not the april fools one) and somewhere near the end my head exploded.

What's the other subject? I did Chemistry at AS, but ugh. :tongue:

I keep getting people messaging me telling me how annoying that video is :laugh: Some of her other videos are pretty cool too.

Mmm American accents can be pretty annoying, but it works on girls, american guys sound stupid. As to my other subjects I would refer you to page 51 of this thread when we started talking.

I think it's more the trolling part of the video that annoys them than the accent - although yes, sometimes the accent can be a bit annoying because for some reason it sounds drawly and lazy.

Haha, that was a week ago, I forget things :laugh:

kk I like calculus and I like matrices so that seems good. Proofs can be annoying but still something I would like to learn, I've heard that there's a lot of proofs in uni maths. I also noticed you mentioned stats and not mechanics, I really dislike mechanics, are there any compulsory mechanics modules in the bath maths course?

A lot would be an understatement. The majority of what we do is proof to be honest... Apart from the applied modules obv. But algebra/analysis/most of computing/stats is all proof. Even some of calculus involves proof. [They're all the 1st year modules ive taken so far].

And yes Re: mechanics. Calculus second semester is compulsory and is mainly mechanics (though its all retaught using vectors; the lecturer says knowing mechanics beforehand can actually be a disadvantage).

Yes, anything written in that format is a power series. I'm not a mathematics undergrad so Quadratic is welcome to correct me on this, but I imagine that after refreshing on these methods there'll be more focus on actually working on the series rather than just generating them (which is boring by itself).

Yup; we don't do any of the generating power series at all. We do however rigorously prove them in analysis, and then apply them in proofs within the other modules. Fun times (Y)...

I'm doing BBA!!! :dance:

That is great. I did BBA at my home university. What are your future plans after finishing it? What is your field of interest?
I love change and strategic management.
