Plays for wider reading (love)

I need plays for AQA english A2 love throughout the ages.

So anything on love really.

I know Shakespeare is good for this, but in all honesty i do have some difficulty with Shakespeare and would appreciate anything else really.

Can be about any form of love, not just relationships.

Thank yous

When I did "Love Through the Ages", I read the following non-Shakespeare plays:
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams
A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
My Mother Said I Never Should by Charlotte Keatley
...and used the following from AS:
A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen
Top Girls by Caryl Churchill
Blood Brothers by Willy Russell
to name but a few.

Honestly though, I actually think you'd be hard placed to find a play - or any text - where you cannot find either love/hate/friendship/comradeship one way or another! :p:

Thanks, thought this was going to one (of many) threads without a reply lol.
Nice selection of plays, i haven't heard of the 'my mother said i never should' sounds really interesting.

Yes, i see what you mean by most plays do have love in them, but in all honesty i'm not much of a play-reader, and it would be easier to pin my reading down with so little time left
By the by, Top Girls, where is the love? it's complete madness

Sisterly love, the love Joyce has for Angie (or at least, the fear that Marlene might take her away), love of work, it all counts!

I've done LOADS of plays, there's stuff like The Recruiting Officer, all about deception and disguise.
You could also look at Lady Windermere's Fan which is about power within marriage and the smokescreen of marriage within the Victorian society.
Um... This is hard without Shakespeare and my list :P
Dr Faustus, but that is quite like Shakespeare.
The Vortex and Private Lives by Noel Coward
Bent (About a gay relationship during Nazi Germany, the last scene is particularly good) - Martin Sherman
The Glass Menagerie - Tennessee Williams
The Caucasian Chalk Circle - Brecht

My English teacher also doubles up as a Drama teacher, can you tell?

Closer - Patrick Marber
A Woman of no Importance - Wilde
Hedda Gabler - Ibsen
The Rover- Aphra Behn
The Rivals - Sheridan
The Beggar's Opera - John Gay

I could help you with Shakespeare if you'd like. I study his works for acting. However, I do promote Tennison. I read a book of his plays last year and one of my favorite was "Lilian"(I believe it was called).

.....Another awesome play is Sweeny Todd. My high school did it this year and it was unbelievable!! I really thought I was in London about to get killed or it really did happen!! And if you ever watched My Fair Lady with Audrey Hepburn... I do believe it speaks for itself.
Hey guys, this is possibly a silly question, but can you reuse plays from AS? I did two plays for coursework last year and since I've only got three plays right now it's either that or extracts.
So far I have:
A Streetcar Named Desire
Translations (never studied)
Women Beware Women (never studied also don't have the text, I read it online)
Thanks x

Oh good

Then I also have A Doll's House and A Woman of No Importance, fits Love through the ages perfectly.

The Duchess of Malfi is a good one as well!
Duchess of Malfi is good because it works on a lot of different levels- illicit love, familial love (or lack of...), passionate love, unconventional love of the time...
The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Rattigan
The Invention of Love by Tom Stoppard
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel
