What happens if you're caught plagiarizing?

Thanks for the few of you who actually gave advice rather than just give judgemental comments. Greatly appreciated

A and B both get screwed...in a purely hypothetical way... of course.

Well unfortunately it is quite a bad situation. I think the minimum would be that the piece of coursework would not be accepted and the marks given would be zero. If the exam board deem it serious enough, then the friend could be disqualified from the whole subject. There have been some extreme cases of being banned for entire exams but I'm unsure.

Also friend A might not escape because they have no way of knowing whose work was who's and who sent it to whom.

You're right it was stupid and by A level they really should be understanding it is their future and they shouldn't screw it up. Friend A should have known better as well.

Sorry for not being too clear, but I think its quite a bad situation for them both.

Ok, lemme throw a hypothetical scenario out there...

Say that friendA helped out friendB on their coursework by sending them a copy of their own. On similar points that they made, friendB tried to re-word it the best they could so that it was different, but it was very late, they were half asleep and may have accidentally left some stuff exactly the same! Similarly structured paragraphs too!

What happens if the teachers realise? Or if they don't, but then the moderators do? They scan the coursework don't they? Will they kick friendB off the course? They can't do much to friendA because it was their original work, but it's an automatic fail for friendB isn't it?

Please reply as the hypothetical friendB might be getting seriously worried about this, even though it was their own stupid fault T_T Thanks.

In red, I corrected it for you. And no, you will both be removed from the course promptly. They can't tell who plagiarized off of who, so both you and **** are in trouble.

If they are caught then the penalty for FriendA is just the same as FriendB as they were party to the cheating. If the school discovers it before FriendB signs the candidate declaration sheet claiming it is all his/her own work then the school does not have to report it to the exam board but just has to decide their own punishment. If the declaration sheet is signed then the school is required to report it as malpractice. The maximum penalty can be barring the people involved from taking exams for a set length of time but it is more likely to be both people get 0 for that unit.
You (hypothetically) should check the academic regulations for your institution. Most likely both A and B are guilty of academic misconduct and may be thrown off the course (perhaps rather less likely if you are in 6th form rather than at uni). In any event, borrowing work from each other is a horrible habit to get into - stop doing it now, and definitely before you get to uni as the consequences will be more serious there.

I have a friend who did this. they both got a call from the teacher who happened to notice before they sent it off. I think they both got given the chance to re write it.

If it's picked up on and they decide to take action, most likely both friends will be f'ed.
Even if they could tell who'd copied from who, 'Friend A' shouldn't have have let 'Friend B' use their work anyway.

Let's hope it is picked up by the teacher

The alternative could be ... work sent off to moderator who does pick up the similarities

Worst case scenario ... all students from centre have work discounted

Best case scenario ... the 2 students are disqualified (possibly from all exams in that sitting)

80-90% of coursework submitted by students sitting the same subject will be more or less the same; they will all have gone through what they're writing about with the teacher, who will have told them 'You must write about this in this way, because it's a really good point, everyone writes this and gets more marks by doing so, it's good to structure your paragraphs in this way, you must make this link' etc.

There's only so much 'original' content a student can produce themselves, and the chances are that anything a student thinks they have thought of by themselves has already been written about by previous students, or is already on various websites, even if they didn't look at them.

It's not very likely that anything is going to happen.

But let's say that FriendB (the guilty one) has submitted their work to the teacher, but the teacher hasn't picked up on the similarities. None of the coursework has been moderated yet, but it's definitely too late to request to re-submit without confessing. If FriendB confesses now, they will most likely get thrown out, but that will mean that FriendA will be fine right? OR what if FriendB tells the moderators that they made a copy of FriendA's work without them knowing? Would that clear FriendA from getting penalised for FriendB's stupidity?

(All hypothetical of course...)

In this hypothetical situation, let's say that the sheets have been signed and it's definitely past the point of being able to request a re-submit without confessing. If they're caught, and the guilty friend, tells them that they took FriendA's work without them knowing, would they let FriendA off the hook? Or do you think that FriendB should confess to the teachers, get withdrawn and kicked out, but at least not drag down anyone with them?

YOU, because YOU probably did something like this, will get in trouble. Along with your other friend.

You're taken off by the exam moderators to a secret room wherein you are spoken to firmly by Muzzy, who is real only for this purpose. If Muzzy is unsatisfied with your statement you are forced to consume scholarly articles written on sugar paper until you're sick as a kind of ironic justice. After which point you are sent home to think about what you've done.
Also you fail your exam.

If it's worded or structured the same, moderators scan every piece of coursework to make sure each piece of work is written uniquely.

You go to jail, don't pick up the soap!
If it's found out and friend B is going down for it, then as Friend A was just trying to help out and it was B who messed up and caused this, the right thing for B to do was to say they took a copy of A's coursework without them knowing.

Should stop A from been punished as they were stupid yes, but it's not something they should possibly fail over.
If you're friend A, you're a total idiot.
If you're friend B, you're a total idiot.

I wouldn't let anyone use my coursework. Why would I want them to use points I worked hard to find out? Both are in serious trouble if caught and not only can it get you disqualified from the subject, but also the entire exam board which could royally mess up any chance you have of going to uni (Unless you only have English on that exam board).

Pure stupidity.
