How insects are used to determine time of death?

Please could someone explain how insects are used to determine time of death?

The text book says 'If the normal length of time for an egg to develop and pupate is subtracted from the date of pupation, it should be possible to work out the date on which the eggs were laid' I don't understand this at all, would really appreciate explaining what this piece of information is saying?

With very limited scientific knowledge I'm guessing it means - calculate how old the egg is by how developed it is, then deduct that from the average pupation period and it will give you the time when it was laid and therefore roughly the time of death?
