UCL Chemistry applicants 2016

Hi everyone, just thought I'd get a thread going for everyone who's applying to/has applied for Chemistry at UCL. I'm applying for Chemistry with a European Language MSci and am taking A2 Chemistry, Maths and Spanish; did AS Biology as well. Got AABB at AS and predicted A*A*A (lol like that's gonna happen, would be happy to get one A*) and so yeah feel free to comment with your course choice and grades etc  also if anyone has any questions about UCL Chemistry then they should ask on here because there seem to be quite a few users around who are currently studying it there and will probs respond. Have fun!

Hey,

I'm applying for the Chemistry Msci with the predicted grades AAA in Biology, Chemistry, Maths. I did English Literature at AS last year and got a B. I'm also doing my EPQ. I am applying for a deferred entry, so that means I'm applying this year for a place at uni for next year so that I can take a gap year.

I'm actually really nervous about the logics test that will take place in the interview (if I get an interview). How do you even prepare for that anyway?

Logics test? At interview they will just test you on Chemistry - they're not going to give you some logic puzzle! UCL's interviews for Chem can apparently be quite academic but also they're often informal - they want to chat to you, not grill you on stuff you don't know/don't understand

Really? I thought that they give you a problem and they try to see how you think, you know how Oxford do their subject interviews? Thanks for the heads up thoug. What would they even talk about in the interview?

I haven't applied to Oxford but one of my mates went for an interview there last year and he said that they just ask solely academic questions until you crack basically! At UCL I would've thought they'd want to talk about any chemistry you've mentioned in your personal statement, what did you do last week in chemistry, then ask further questions extending on what you already know

Thanks for the clarification!
Anyone got an interview invitation? When did you send your application?

I heard they interview every Tuesday so perhaps you'll hear back soon? I wouldn't worry about it, I mean your predicted grades exceed the entry requirements so if your personal statement is reasonably good I don't see why you shouldn't at least be invited to one of these open day/interview things.

Snap! I'm doing Chemistry, Maths and French (did Bio last year) and applying for Chemistry with a European Language MSci (with French obvs). I've been told my combo is quite strange but i don't think it is that much idk. Have you applied yet and if so where?

Wow that's cool! Not a strange combo at all imo. I did Bio last year too. Great to finally talk to someone who's applying for the Chem with Euro Lang degree, there don't seem to be many of us out there! What did you get at AS? I applied on 13th October, been invited for interview at UCL on 3rd November, interview at Leeds on the 11th, and haven't heard anything from Bristol, Manchester or Nottingham yet. Wbu?

I got AAAB (B was in chem wasn't expecting gonna retake unit 1 and bump it up to an A overal at A2). Lol I remember messaging you after the C2 exam because I thought I was gonna flunk maths but I came out with an A so that's pretty decent! I love French so glad I didn't drop it, it's a breath of fresh air from doing very mathsy/sciensy subjects (not that I still don't love chem). Haven't applied yet but I'm thinking UCL/Imperial/Bristol/Sussex hopefully by the end of this week

Oh yeah I remember now! Ah shame about the B in Chem, overall your grades are very good though! I'm very happy that I dropped Biology, AQA's markschemes really wound me up. I know exactly what you mean - doing a language alongside Chemistry and Maths makes things so much easier and actually opens more doors when it comes to degree courses (UCL's course doesn't require an A Level in the language actually but it will def help imo). Ah nice, Bristol is great! Imperial's a bit too hardcore for me lool

I always found Biology boring and it's a bit irrelevant for my degree course, I guess I could drag it along for AS but def not for A2. In fact my friends left today to go for a week long bio trip in the middle of Wales for their coursework throwing quadrants around!
Yeah it definitely does open more doors! Do you think we'll get more priority for the year abroad course than thos who haven't? Lol "hardcore" yeah I guess it is! I've been on a summer school there and kinda liked it but they really do work their students into the ground so idk if people even have a "social life" there. I guess it's more like a "social hour"!

A-Level Biology isn't that helpful for degree level chemistry, I mean besides you learn about the actual structure of things like amino acids in A2 chemistry anyway xD and as for the ecology/plant crap, that's basically the reason why I didn't carry on Biology to A2 lol. Oh that sounds boring, funnily enough the biology class at my school did the same 3 weeks ago! Yeah I think we will because they'll definitely favour those with an A Level in the lang over just a GCSE or AS. hahaha they work the students too hard there, but that's sort of what people go to imperial for...even so I don't think people realise just how intense it is and how little time you have to socialise xD

Awesome, I guess I'll see you there! I got AAAA (biology, chemistry, maths and physics). Predicted A*A*A*A respectively (because physics was 89%... haha I did terribly in the ISA). What about you?
