Glasgow Accomodation

Hi Everyone,

My questions may have already been answered so sorry if this is the case, however, I was mainly looking for a comparison between QM and Firhill? In particular what are the social aspects like as I heard from someone that QM can be a little quiet? I don't quite want it to be at the level some describe Murano but at the same time I don't want to be struck with flatmates who never socialise.

Also are the QM flats self contained or is it just a corridor or rooms?

Any advice of where to go is greatly appreciated!

Hi there! I'm in Firhill and I've visited QM a number of times, so I can give you a bit of info.

Socially, they're quite similar. There will always be a party wherever you go, so I doubt you'll ever be stuck in that department, but the two just generally hold fewer students so it's guaranteed to be quieter than Murano. My flatmates are out nights of the weekend and people are always advertising pre-drinks on Facebook, but I never feel like I have to go anywhere with them. You get the chance at a quiet night in Firhill/QM more than Murano, I'd say.
QM is generally more popular than Firhill, but I think that's mostly just because it's more well known. It has it's advantages such as the common room shared area which Firhill lacks, and it's a bit closer to the university. I'd say that the rooms in Firhill are much more modern looking than QM, and you can definitely tell that Firhill used to be a private student residence whereas QM has always been run by the university.
All three options, QM, Firhill and Murano, are based in self contained flats. As far as I'm aware, the only accommodation block which isn't set out like this is Cairncross.

Hope this has been helpful, any more questions, just give me a shout!
Hey everyone! I'm an international student who has already accepted my unconditional offer to University of Glasgow for this year for an Msc in Development Studies. I have been researching accommodation options both on campus and and off through private accommodation such as Vita Student Glasgow and Gallery Apartments. I'd like some help in this regard. Thanks!

Hi I have a few questions,
1. Does it matter if I wait till after the applicant day to apply for accommodation will I put myself at a disadvantage for getting my 1st or 2nd choice of accommodation?

2. Which are the most popular accommodation and which are best for quiet, community feels and transport to uni and are generally the best for different people?

Thank u
Any opinions on private accomodation like Unite students / CRM students / student.com?

I wanted to know this too. I've looked at vita students as well. their accommodation seems nice too and it's brand new, opening for september.
Anyone know why Glasgow have taken Firhill Court off of their accommodation list?
Considering renting a place with Vita Student for my first year.
I just happen to be one of those people who cannot stand the thought of not having my own private kitchen or bathroom, so their studios are a perfect fit.

Anyone here who knows of cheaper places to live in/very close to the city centre, with mostly the same facilities? (I'm thinking kitchen utilities etc included. The gym and cinema room aren't important.)
I've looked at uni accommodation, but I don't feel satisfied to be honest...

I'm considering Vita too for the same reasons as you. They seem to be the most reasonable with the amenities that they provide.

My main problem is how I'll be able to afford rent and tuition fees...
I don't think I'll be getting a part time job, because the hourly pay is like half of what it is in my home country, so I don't feel like it'll be worth it.

I understand. I'm waiting to hear about a scholarship, that's when i'll know what I can afford so I haven't booked anything yet

Just booked my studio with Vita. Now I'm just waiting to hear back from uni.
I'm going to Glasgow Uni in September and i'm applying for first year accommodation at the moment. I'm really considering Student Apartments but haven't really found too much information out about them.

What are they like from a social point of view? And if I apply for a single room (as all six of my choices will be when I apply), would I be given a twin room instead if there are no more single rooms available or would they go straight onto my second choice?

I'd be really thankful for any help!!
Murano seems to be quite sociable, how ever it does look slightly like a prison and you have to share bathrooms which is a bit grim. Im in firhill now which is quite nice you get an en suite and a queen size bed and the kitchen/living room area is also nice. They're both roughly a 20/25minute walk to the uni, and around 30minute walk to the main city centre. Think queen margaret is a bit closer to the uni and you also have an en suite but I've not heard much about it. Also for firhill it said for me 134per week but i pay 599 per month which is quite a lot.
Hi guys, can somebody who has been in the student apartments share some information? There isn't much mentioned about them...

Hi!
I didn't stay at the student apartments, but some of my friends did. The flats I visited seemed nice, and the best thing is that they are located so near the uni. If you can't find information on TSR, you can fill in a "Ask a student" form on Glasgow Uni website at http://www.gla.ac.uk/studentlife/askastudent/ to ask students who stayed in the student apartments about their experiences. Also, there is some practical information available here: http://www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_127833_en.pdf
Hope this helps.
