Hi guys, can somebody who has been in the student apartments share some information? There isn't much mentioned about them...

Hi there,

I am currently in fourth year and I lived in QM for my first year. I had a really enjoyable experience. For me, the best thing was the ensuite bathroom! The size of the flats are quite good in my opinion, the room is spacious and the kitchen-social area is also a good size. There were 5 students (including me) in my flat and if I remember correctly, there are 8 flats per block.

I didn't find QM boring because I got on with my flatmates. I went out from time to time into the city to try different nightclubs as well. I would say that QM is not known for being 'party central'. Murano has more of a reputation for that.

I found that QM was slightly far from the medical school which is where I spent most of my time, however walking through the Botanic Gardens made the walk quite scenic. It was approximately 20 minutes walk but probably achievable in 15 minutes if you're seriously power-walking!

If you are looking for uni accomodation that is peaceful but still allows for socialising and has an ensuite bathroom, I would really recommend QM.

I hope this helps and I'm happy to answer further questions.

Hi, so i have been accepted to study at Glasgow and have applied for Queen Margret, however i have been told it is quite boring and not many parts. Now i am not just going for party however i wouldn't complain if they were there. Can someone enlighten me as to if this rumour is true and where would be a better alternative

Anyone know why Glasgow have taken Firhill Court off of their accommodation list?

think its because firhill got bought over by someone else so its going to be private halls and not glasgow uni halls

I stay in firhill and i would say its pretty good but apparently its not on the accommodation list anymore. I would say murano is where the most partying and socialising goes on and yea i heard QM is quite boring and wolfson is pretty far away
Hi,
Does anyone know what the deal is with the private hall accomodations?
West Village for instance I've been looking at and they look amazing (and slightly too good to be true) so I was wondering if there was some catch or something - like they're incredibly dull for instance.

Hi  I was thinking of applying for Queen Margret, but I noticed that it's quite far away from the city, so I was wondering if any of you guys know what the area is like, is there a lot going on? or do you feel like you have to spend ages on a bus to get everywhere?

Hi Lia54,

Queen Margaret Residences is approximately 20 minutes walk to Campus. It's a very scenic walk through the Botanic Gardens.

To get to the city centre you can get a bus from Great Western Road, 5 minutes walk from Queen Margaret. Buses to the city centre run very frequently and the trip will take you around 20 minutes. Hillhead Subway station is approximately 15 minute walk from the residence.

It is quite likely that you'll spend most of your time shopping and socialising around the West end, along Byres Road. You can be there in 10 minutes!

Have a look at our Know Your Area Guide to get a feeling about what to do around Queen Margaret

Sandra

Hello there
Just wondering to many undergraduate students stay in Unite Students accommodation or is it mainly for postgrads?

I live in halls so I'm most likely biased, but I'd say halls. A lot of people I know who don't live in halls and don't already know people at the uni have had a really hard time making friends and expanding their social group within the uni because any uni student can live in rented flats. If you're in first year, definitely go for halls.

Just wondering what halls dental/medics stay in?
Hello,
Just applying for accommodation and it seems Murano is all that's left - which I'm fine with as it sounds like a laugh - but now I just need to decide whether to go for a small or large flat.
I'm not overly fussy about sharing things and living standards not being great (I'm at boarding school which although sounds nice can be absolutely disgusting e.g I share 3 showers with 28 teenage boys and one kitchen with 60.) but all the same I don't wanna live in an absolute hole.
Large flats seem to have the potential to be grimmer but then I've also heard they've been done up lately?
Any help appreciated!

Large for social life. The danger with small is you could have 2 flatmates that don't leave their room

i think only some of the large flats have been done up in murano, theres not a living room in murano only a kitchen with a small dining table.
Not sure if firhill is still an option, its been bought over by 'homes for students' and its cheaper for 2016/2017 than it was for this year
Do all vet students stay at Wolfson hall or do some stay in the other residences? Apart from Wolfson hall, which hall is closest the vet school? Is it possible to self-cater at Wolfson hall or must you pay the fee that includes the meals?
Hi @hilaryplz,

Vet students may stay in any residence, they are not exclusively in Wolfson Hall although its location makes it a popular option!

From Queen Margaret Residences you could get to the Vet School in around 20 minutes taking the 15 bus from Great Western Road.

From Murano Street Student Village you may take a bus from Maryhill Road towards Garscube and then walk around 15 minutes through the park to the Vet School. The journey takes around 30 minutes.

Wolfson Hall is a catered hall and self-catered accommodation is not available within the residence. All travel fees are also included for Wolfson Hall residents, you will get a travel card so you can easily move around the city.

Best wishes,
Sandra

Hi there - I'm confused - I had heard that Queen Margaret Residences were full for this year (2016/2017) already - i.e you needed to have submitted your application request with choices at least a month ago to get Queen Margaret Residences. :-)

Hi there! I stayed in a small flat at Murano during my first year (2012-2013) and thought it was pretty good. I had 4 flatmates. My flat was pretty quiet but some small flats definitely were much more lively and social! Really depends on your personality I guess. For me large flats would have been too much because of the amount of people, but at least back in 2012 most of the large flats seemed to be in an okay condition, but I guess it ultimately depends on who you're living with. But either one you pick, it's just one year  Let me know if you have more questions about living at Murano.
