Student Prostitution: Myth or Reality?

Recently in the press it has been voiced that is currently more likely that students are turning to sex work for financial support, particularly in light of the tuition fee raise. Med students have been discussed as being particularly in danger, as they spend more time in education and are said to accumulate 5 times more debt than any other student. These recent occurrences have prompted the Swansea University study, into whether or not student sex work is a growing problem.

Whats your opinion? Do you know anyone who's turned to prostitution to fund their studies? Is student prostitution really a problem?

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

it isnt a problem they come out without the crippling debt other students have. no different than getting any job during uni, except you will get paid a lot more and work less. i know a few inc girl from school who is studying media at uni. it isnt a myth its to be expected given the fact women are less employed than men anyway overall, most jobseekers are women and there is barely any work. that is what happens. maybe could have been avoided if big companies did not constantly employ migrants for cheap labour.
It's nonsense. No-one pays tuition up front. There is no extra burden on the student while at university. It's propaganda. It's called a loan for a reason. Rent hasn't gone up. The only people struggling are those who the government expects to rely on their over taxed parents for another £5000 to live on and spend on rent at uni.

Also, I a lot of people could do it for a little while and dip in and out, its the "sex industry" per say tbh... To gain disposable income or pay for that exotic holiday...

I know for example its not uncommon for ppl do to anything for a Cambridge Ball Ticket, particularly Trinity / St Johns...

In the UK, it's not very popular because the government do give you loans and your student loans are paid over the course of your career only when you pass a certain amount of salary. There's very little reason why uni students would resort to stripping/prostitution. It happens but not very widespread. Med students have pretty much a guaranteed career, why would they bother stripping/prostitution? Plus, they probably can't afford to work a lot and study a lot.

There's no reason that the increase in tuition fees should result in this due to the loans system.

Aren't tuition fees the same? FREE as your loan pays for this.

And no pay back until you start to earn over £21,000 a year after graduating.

Not sure about how common prostitution is in students, but a couple of years ago, I and a friend were approached by a guy on campus trying to hire us as escorts!! We told him where to go, but sadly I think it may be an option for some. I've run into financial difficulties whilst being at uni, and it's never been so bad I would resort to that, but I imagine if you're really desperate it could be something you can fall into...

Also, why would the fee hike cause this? You don't pay them upfront or anything.
I think its a reality, I can imagine this happening, when people hear prositute they imagine a street walker, I think students are more likely to be call girls than anything else.

I think people going 'student fees arnt upfront money so therefore it doesnt result in any increase' OPEN YOUR EYES, some people find money and debt extremely stressful, just because your able to sweep the thought of it under the carpet and go - 'oh ill pay later' doesnt mean everyone else is? The costs of living in places like London is ridiculous aswell and I can imagine its very easy to see being an escort as a good financial plan.

Dont label these women as slags and sluts, in a way - at least theyre getting paid for it?

Hello my dear lady, it's an unfortunate reality of our troubled time that many women in my area have to turn to prostitution. As I say you have to do what you have to do, don't you? Peace.

Indeed.

'You need to acquaint yourself, with the facts, madam. This is a reality - there are a sizeable number of young women engaging in this activity in my locale. I am often fond of saying, however, in times of struggle, there exist few other options, and one must bear the brunt of the more difficult choices. Adieu.'
Excellent job.

Like anything in the press it is blown out of proportion. Yes there will be a minuscule number of people who do it, but that just comes down to a fact of life really. Hardly a student phenomenon.
