What is life like in Wolverhampton?

I have applied to university in fact I got my offers back and I am trying to decide between Hull and Wolverhampton, so my main questions would be:

What is the student life like in Wolverhampton?

Is there a lot to do?

What societies are there?

What are the living costs like?

If anyone does War Studies, What is it like at Wolverhampton (The units, the course and if there are any field trips)?

It's just that I found the prospectus and stuff like that useful but not containing enough detailed information on what I want to know.

i have to catch the bus through wolverhampton (i go to a sixth form near there) and to be honest...it's the most run down and depressing place i've seen in England, thank gosh i don't live there! sorry if i'm being rude but the fact that i can't wait to drive so that i can avoid this place just emphasises how awful i feel wolves is. from what i've seen and heard from family and friends; the uni is very poor (rankings wise too), i'm sure Hull is much better imo. to add salt to the wound, wolves was voted in the top 5 worst places in the world (google it).

I haven't even been there and I can tell it's not a nice place to live. Go to Hull!

I live near Wolvo and work in Wolvo and I actually really like it here.
It's not the best place in the world but it has pretty decent shopping, good transport links and as far as I know, the nightlife is also pretty good.
My older brother went to Wolvo uni and stayed at the Walsall campus and he loves it there, it was also pretty cheap if I remember correctly.
I can't be of much more help as I don't know the university very well

I've been at Wolverhampton uni for the past year but I am transferring to BCU to finish my degree.

The town isn't horrible, there is plenty to do and get involved with.

The uni, although not in the league tables as everyone here is obsessed with, is okay. The lecturers are interesting and the facillities are really nice and modern.

I'm transferring because I want to be closer to home and commuting to Wolverhampton is horrible for me.

If I had the choice between Wolverhampton and Hull though, I would go to Hull. Wolverhampton students just don't seem to be that motivated.

I dont know to be honest. Wolverhampton tend to let anyone in through clearing. It's how I ended up there because I was never motivated at A-level and got pretty rubbish grades. Anyway, I've worked my arse off this year to get high marks and managed to transfer elsewhere.

However, that wasn't the same for everyone on my course, people stopped turning up in january, didn't hand in thier work ect and nothing was really said to them. It's quite depressing in Wolverhampton, but it could be different when you live there. I always saw it as a chore to travel an hour and a half into university.

so which uni did you want to go to in the first place ?
Wolverhampton is one of the worst places I have ever had the misfortune of visiting. Go to Hull.
It's an absolute cess. Most awful place I have ever had the misfortune to visit - but there are tram connections to Birmingham Snow Hill and British Rail to Birmingham and the West Midlands as well, so you wouldn't be trapped up in Wolves.

Wolverhampton has a bad reputation, but my own experience of it has been fine. There's not a great deal there to be honest, but it's a nice enough place around the centre, nothing special at all as I say but it has all the basics. I'm sure it has some bad areas, but the same could be said about any city really. There are pretty good transport links (tram, bus, train etc.) so you could easily get to Birmingham for instance if you wanted more around you. So yeah I'm not going to suggest it's some sort of paradise, but it's not a wasteland either. The Uni is nice enough too, quite nice buildings, the library is very useful and the people there helpful, there are plenty of facilities etc. I haven't been to Hull so can't comment on that, but consider both.

You really need to come on an open day. I had the same opinion as most people in this thread, wolverhampton was originally my 5th choice, however it turned out that the course I want to do fitted with me better here. They have a very good employment scheme and a good track record of employment. All the people I know that have graduated from wolverhampton do have jobs in a line of work related to their studies.

I wouldn't trust league tables. I did that. League tables are more to do with independent research presented by the university etc. and it really doesn't take into account quality of teaching.
Also, another reason it won't look good on league tables is because they have chosen to opt out of them. A lot of universities choose to do this due to the fact it costs money e.g. like a hotel applying for their stars.

“The most recent National Student Survey rated Wolverhampton as one of the best in the country for the quality of its learning resources and access to specialist equipment.”
- I can now vouch for this quote having been to the open day back in march. A 4 storey hi-tech library with conference rooms you can book for group projects or just to rehearse a presentation is pretty handy!

Yet another reason to ignore general league tables is because it doesn't reflect quality of individual subject choices.

Lastly, please notice that the negative commenter's have never even set foot inside the university.

no wolves opted out of the league tables because they were embarrassed LOL! and yes i have set foot in the uni (attended a lecture for a project i was involved in that had nothing to do with the uni) and it is genuinly NO different to a typical college; noting special and not big at all. i even heard from some that lecturers are bribed by students with money or SEX

What is the student life like in Wolverhampton?

The main SU is in the city campus. When you turn up on the first day they have current students called "Best Friends" which help people get talking to each other, making friends, organising trips etc. Also the free trip to IKEA is real handy when you first move into your halls. I remember on the open day the whole place felt like a holiday camp, everyone is really nice.
The city itself is quite industrial, yet at the same time it has lots of trees :u: ...try to avoid whitmore reans it's a bad area! But to be honest you get that everywhere.
I hate football, but admittedly they do have the best fans and whenever a match is on you'll always see a snake of families dressed in black and gold. People are really nice and actually say hello to you unlike here in Cheshire where everyone is stuck up their own arses.

Is there a lot to do?

City Centre
The city centre has a range of high street shops, for instance you get all the usual stuff like Primark, Bank, Top Shop etc. quite a lot of choice for a small city! It's really good if you are one of those people who don't want to spend the whole day shopping! However, there is a tram and a train that have direct links to birmingham so you could just go to the Bullring if you wanted more choice.
Everyone seems to rave on about the night-life but I wouldn't really know. Student nights are on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Most people start at Walkabout where drinks are £1 each. There is a new nightclub I think that has recently opened a couple of months ago, I remember my brother raving on about it.

Bentley Bridge
This is a retail park with things like Comet to Next but everyone usually goes for the massive Nando's, Cineworld, Bowling/Arcade, Gym, things like this.

Travel Links
Wolverhampton has a train station and a tram link right in the city centre. Mostly the train you can use to get to Birmingham (about 25 mins), Manchester (about an hour and a bit) etc.
You don't have to be confined to the city centre. Also if you like ice-skating as many people but me seem to I' recommend catching a bus from the bus station to Telford. (Also has a good shopping centre)

What societies are there?

Not sure what they are like but here is the link to all of them. A lot of them are free! There is also financial support available to help fund any membership costs.

What are the living costs like?

It's a cheap place to live that's for sure!
For halls I'm going to be paying £83 a week for private halls (Victoria Halls) and that is with my own en suite!
Economy university halls are £65 per week I think.

No they said that "they disadvantage universities such as Wolverhampton and do not represent a fair picture."

Which is pretty true to be honest and I'd actually agree with them on this.
It is actually more of a teaching university more than anything and they care more about what they can actually do for the student rather than themselves, hence smaller class sizes etc. (I'm going to be studying in the Walsall campus)
And the picture below proves this since it is one of the best universities in the country for teacher training which spoke volumes to me.

They choose to be assessed by the Quality Assurance Agency (like every university) and don't want some random newspaper that is probably biased and elitist to paint them with the wrong brush. Fair enough really. Many universities choose to do this.

i even heard from some that lecturers are bribed by students with money or SEX

Proof?
This would have been all over the news. I hear this everywhere I go about universities...however the rumours never suffice to be newsworthy for some reason, perhaps due to the lack of proof. (See below)

Im from around wolverhampton, but now go to uni in manchester. In all honesty i wouldnt move to wolverhampton out of choice there are no opportunities there and theres not much to do compared to a major city, but i guess it depends on what sort of person you are.
I'm not a Wolverhampton student, but I do spend a lot of time in Wolverhampton.

It's nothing special, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. There is reasonable nightlife and decent nightlife, and Birmingham is a bus ride away. There are some run-down parts, but they exist everywhere.

I lived in wolverhampton for 16 years and the only people who slag it off are the ones who live in run down areas. Its no worse than any other city. The only thing is the shopping is poor (Clothes wise) but birmingham is a train ride away so its not bad. Nightlife is ok but you could go to birmingham once in a while.

The ones on here slagging in off have never been to the Uni or the city so i have no idea why they are posting on here?
