"comrade". fitting :yep:
the political spectrum thing isn't designed to suggest what works in application!
socialism will inevitably fail until every single person within a community wholeheartedly believes in the concept and commits to following it honestly and selflessly.

it's natural for people to be selfish and to fight for 'survival' at the expense of others, and a shame that unlike capitalism/ general right-winging, literally EVERYBODY has to be on board with the idea for it to be successful (meh, economically so anyway)

I remember one of the questions is something along the lines of controlling unemployment is more important than controlling inflation, and it's like what are you meant to put to that: of course jobs are more important than minor inflation fluctuations but the two of them are linked together in such a way that you can't really prioritise.

I just put unemployment anyway because I'd take a weak pound for more jobs: atm it's a weak pound and few jobs! Nicely done.

Just to link it into a bit of Cambridge... Keynes, a good ol' King's chap, his ideas are ultimately the ones I fall most for. Socialist thinking when it comes to public services, but the market: go for Keynes.

As expected. I didn't really understand some of the terms used though :frown: I feel dumb. Are they just economic terms or something a prospective Cambridge student should know?

If you're PPS or History then I'd worry but otherwise some of the terms used you'd have to be a bit of a political boff to get.

When I got my friends to do it they often had to ask so don't feel too bad lol

We never all lived at home! There is like 19 years between the oldest and the youngest! We've never actually all been together!!!

Well, I guess having them indifferent to the decision is better then them telling everyone that you're going... Before you get in!!!

Ha ha.. You can become a teacher..? I'm sure that there is loads that you can do with one! I'm glad that my course leads straight into a career and I don't have to get any extra degree... unless I want one!!!

What are you looking into doing when you finish?

Oh wow, there's only 13 years between us all,I can't imagine what it must have been for the oldest, at 13 years old with 6 younger siblings. That must be really weird tho, is there a big gap around the middle? We're pretty evenly spread until the four year gap between 6 and 7.

Ah yeah my grandparents have been sorta doing that, soooo annoying. They don't seem to realise I might get a rejection.

It's because I have no idea what I want to do, so if they ask I tell them I'm planning on becoming a spy XD. I'm sure there's loads of weird banking things that I could do, I'm just not interested in that kinda thing atm. My mum's always had a secret ambition that one of us becomes a doctor, or at least does a vocational course, so she's currently nagging my younger sister to do something that'll get her a job, I think they've given up on me . It's good that you know what you want to be, I know so many people who are unemployed after leaving uni.

I get the fun of FP2 and FP3 as well, but at least revising for those will help with STEP. I don't even get to relax at the weekend either because of physics unit 5 on the following Monday  In fact I only have two exams not in that week, exam boards should really try not to arrange all their exams at the same time...

You do S3? I don't think I could cope with that, S1 was bad enough...

And loving it :awesome:. Hated S1 and S2, but S3's not too bad. Definitely preferable to mechanics, am struggling to get through M1. M2 and M3 are going to be torture.

It'd be worth it for Cambridge, but if I don't get in (and if I get an offer from Durham) then I'm giving STEP a miss. Imperial FTW

My mother had children in June 1983, November 1984, January 1986, then twins (ME!!!) in September 1992, April 1997 and finally December 2000! SO we really are like two different families! The older ones went to the States when I was like 7 and they only come back every 3 to 4 years! (My brother is coming back soon!!! Super excited about that!!! )

Well, they have faith in you... Which is more than I can say for myself! I am expecting the worst, just so I won't be as disappointed as I will be!

I have friends like that and they will all end up doing arts courses (which like the A-levels, but in university) and what do you say to someone with an arts degree? Can I have fries with that?! The degree is really worthless on it's own, you have to do at least another two or three years when you finish to make it worth while!!! I've wanted to be a vet since I was like 4! Rolf Harris kinda forced me into it!

My mother promised my brother the house if he became a vet.... However, I have no such luck! yeah my brother can't find a job in marketing, so he is working for my dads friend! My dad won't give him a job because of nepotism ... My sister wants him to come home and apply for the Apprentice Ireland... Now that would be quality television!

I am in no way committing that fallacy. It is reasonable to surmise that in a country, similar to Egypt, where there is no credit, the building will be bad and unfinished, knowing, as we do, that the buildings in Egypt are unfinished because of the lack of credit. It is reasonable to surmise that, in a country similar to Egypt, where the country is a desert... that it will be a desert. It is reasonable to surmise that, in a country similar to Egypt, where the state religion is Islam, the meat won't taste like meat - because it will be halal - and the women won't look like women - because they will be covered. I am in no way asserting that it is certain that these will all be the case, but it seems rather likely, doesn't it?

Yes it is fallacious logic. You can't just find two or three factors which you assume two regions have in common and then surmise that the two regions are going to be the same? Surely you realise that an expanse of land as large as North Africa and the Middle East is bound to be very diverse, geographically and culturally? You're also assuming that Muslims are a group of mindless drones who all behave, dress and cook in the same way. What you're saying is pretty ludicrous. It's also very ethnocentric and I find it pretty damn offensive- despite the fact that I'm Irish. I can't imagine how an Egyptian would take it.

Have some Friedman quotes. On me.

Market ftw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!!11!!!ONE!!!11!!

edit: yeah, I post pictures because I cba thinking of things to say myself. I've gone through this debate so much with so many i've lost all interest.

I'd take issue with the first statement about unlimited pie. After all, that is the founding premise of economics.

Well here's mine: Probably pretty accurate.

Although there were too many normative statements in the Economics section for my taste :naughty:

Really? Wow, I thought stats could only get worse, luckily my school only make us do S1 and we go up to M4 instead, man did I hate S1... I really like mechanics, it's challenging but I think it gets better from M2 onwards, just got M4 left after Jan...

Haha, that's exactly what I'm thinking, seeing as if not Cambridge then it's either Imperial, Durham or Warwick for me, but I cba to go through STEP for Warwick so it'll probably be Imperial with Durham as insurance. Imperial is so awesome *Hi fives* (though it isn't quite Cambridge )
Done my political compass

Not surprised about the results though, still a strong Labour supporter :yep:

I might be wrong about this, but I believe that Friedman isn't talking about an unlimited pie- rather, a growing pie. The main issue is with mercantilism, where countries do not believe in wealth creation and try and get the largest piece of what they believe to be 'a fixed pie'. Therefore, they try and get as many exports and minimise imports by tarriffs and other policies. It is this behaviour that free market economist criticise. I might be wrong in relation to this particular quote, but mercantilism was criticised on the premise of there not being 'a fixed pie'.
Anyway I did the political compass a while back, I got 5.25,-0.97 I think (economically right, slightly liberatarian). Did it again just now for a probably more accurate test- 6.38, -1.44

I should warn you now that I happen not to give a crap about the offence of people I don't know. Just to put that out there before we go anywhere with this discussion. Attacking me with 'oh, I'm offended' shan't get you very far.

Anyway, I mentioned some very specific factors that are specific to Islam. They do all eat halal meat; the women do - and this one, admittedly, is only most - cover themselves. It's part of the religion.

As for the other things, I mentioned that the other places would be similarly sandy - which the whole region is (use the internet; or a globe) - and that the places wouldn't be very well built - which is also demonstrably true.
I made no sweeping statements, and at no point insinuated that all middle eastern peoples and cultures are homogeneous.

A bit like the Christian slutty women with barely any clothes on from rainy/snowy lands who eat unfairly reared meat from their fast food outlet?

Oh wait no that's an example of yet more sweeping statements

"I happen not to give a crap about the offence of people I don't know" Aren't you just a lovely person. I'm not a Christian, but perhaps a little bit of the ol' treating your neighbour nicely would go down well here.

You're a twin!? Identical :awesome:? Sorry I've always thought it'd be really cool to have an identical twin but in reality it's probably not that great. We see each other fairly often, two of my sibs are down in London, but the rest are close to home and we still all go on family holidays XD. Having a few in the US would be worth it if I could go over and visit though .

Yeah it's just very hypocritical coming from my mother who did an degree in english and my dad who chose his based on what he thought would be the least work rather than any career .

M4 :afraid:. I'm doing FP3 as an extra so may chicken out of M3 .
That'd be my preferred combination as well. I'm going to open days later on and might suddenly fall in love with Warwick but I doubt it, the campus set-up really doesn't appeal. Woop I love Imperial, though the all-sciences is a bit scary (I don't do any science :colondollar:, I'll feel like an impostor), but lots of fun geeky people .

And seeing as everyone's doing the political compasses:

Economic Left/Right: -6.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.69

Nah, it's just when it's entirely irrational and thrown around as the 'offence' card. It 'kettles my swede', to turn Shaun Ryder's phrase.
I don't get what you're getting at with the first comment. People are generally - note the use of the word, generally - devout followers over there, and to cover oneself and eat halal meat is part of the religion. Being a slut and not wearing clothes is not part of Christianity. And yes, the places are sandy. You, and the above poster, are drawing huge insults to entire peoples out of limited factual comments.
