Edit.. and to be fair, you'll spend more of your time in lecture theatres in George Square than in Old College, where you'll perhaps have 1 tutorial a week or something I'd guess.

oh forgot to ask..are u sure about this? unlioke the other arts peeps, we do start right away with the law, so wouldnt that be held in old college..with my tutorial in George Square?

is warrenders crescent near to old college?

1. Yes there is all post grad accom, can't remember the names, I think it on the uni webby.

2. Relatively speaking warrender isn't near old college, but Edinburgh is really quite small (the uni area anyway) so you'll soon get used to it. I'd say Old College is no more than 5 mins from George Square and that includes time spent in buildings. Really don't worry about distances that much, at 1st everything seems miles but once you get to know the place it ain't all that big.

3. Its Sciennes not Cheynes! (pronounced sheens)

Well, I'm guessing that old college won't have lecture theatres big enough to accommodate the whole of the first year Law group.... so the lectures will be held in the theatres in George Square... Although if anyone knows better than me feel free to correct me! But they will have rooms in Old College big enough for the 10 odd people in a tutorial. At least that's how it works with Geography & Archaeology (and Meteorology in it's KB equivalent) in the first year.

And like Dogberry said, they are 5 mins apart so it's not really a big deal!

oh alright, thank you very much!
This is an absolute nightmare. Beyond Darroch Court I haven't got a clue about which flat I want to be in. Inside, which are the other more aesthetically pleasing? That's the last factor I'm trying to take into account but naturally there's no pictures and I haven't seen any buildings from the inside.

Can anyone tell me what Hermits Croft is like? Or South Clark Street? I reckon my choices are going to be:

1. South Clerk Street
2. Hermits Croft
3. East Newington Place

But I want to check what Hermits Croft is like. If it is generally nicer than SCS I may put it as my first choice.

edit: I've changed my mind. Edin no longer for me! Glsgow here I come.

Hi there,

I'll be going to Edinburgh next year, and will be on a physics course thus most of my time spent in the Kings building (i think, correct me if im wrong). Anyway, I looked at the map someone posted and it seems that the only self catered flat near by is West Mains Road - which is a 51 week contract and also on the ed site it says its mainly for postgrads. I'm stuck, i have no idea which flats to choose. As I've read, darroch court is good, but is a distance away from Kings building. How long, walking, would it take to get to the Kings building from around darroch court area (as thats where most of the flats are based around.)
Help me pleaseee!!!

Thanks

There is a shuttle bus that runs between George Square & KB. It'd probably take between 5 and 10 mins to walk to the bus stop at GS and then 10 mins on the bus to KB. If you wanted to walk, you could probably do it in half an hour.. and biking, 10-20 mins. It really is best to live around George Square as most societies and socialising will go on around there... KB becomes pretty much dead after 6 o'clock!

hey i've not read the thread - but my opinion -
i stayed in warrender park crescent just because the building is gorgeous on the outside and being by the meadows, moviebank, cameo cinema is great. the rooms are a great size but as with all self catering accom, after xmas ppl are really settled and each flat becomes quite self contained. i mean theres less flat parties and its harder to keep seeing everyone other than ppl in your corridor (2 or 3 flats). I found it was just the same in another SC flat i lived in so i would consider this + the girls in warrender this year were 6/10s.
If you want to go where the girls are and where you'll meet a LOT more ppl, look to pollock, kincaids or darroch. I think these have a mix of SC and C.
I was a fussy eater so i chose SC and if your lucky you'll end up really bonding with your flatmates, but if you think you can handle the food (6/10 most of the time :P) then i would go for catered in pollock.
I don't know if you can request chancellors court, but its the most expensive and where most of the yahs live, but thats not a problem. University is great, you get to meet a big bunch of ppl with diverse backgrounds and edinburgh offers hella lot of gigs and nights out for meeting like minded ppl of you don't like who you live with or whatever.
Good luck kids

memo me if you want more info, i probably have photos of wpc if your interested

I choose Kincaids, no idea why, it was just a random decision after stressing out over which to choose.
I'm so glad I havn't read any horror stories about the accomodation.
Well I chose warrender so what you've said sounds good - although I'm a little insulted by your description of the girls there. (quite chauvinistic methinks) Self contained flats without a huge amount of partying was one of the reasons that living out appealled - so you have reassured me there.

Hi!
Does anyone know about the possibilities of renting student accomodation short time? I'll be in Edinburgh for the 1st semester as an Erasmus-student, so would like a room from +/- 10th of September til +/- 10th of January. I've applied for University-accomodation as the Erasmus-coordinator said there might be a chance of getting a room. However, I think I would prefer a room in the private sector (most of you seem te think it's better price/quality) Do you think I'll be able to find something for 4 months? Or should I go for University-accomodation if I get an offer? Thanks!

Personally, I'd go for a room in the university accommodation if you're only in Edinburgh for a few months as you'll get to meet more people quickly, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but it might be harder to make friends if you're living on your own as you haven't got the automatic "must make friends, I'm living with all of these people" push factor.
Ask the accommodation office about getting a room in the private sector, as most people here are first years and will be living in uni accommodation for the first year.

Yes, I'd agree with that... I was not in Uni accom the 1st year and found that initially my circle of friends was rather small! But after joining a few societies i now have looooaaaaaaaaaads of friends!!

Also, most leases here are for 1 year, and others are 6 monthly, renewable every 2 months so you may have trouble renting somewhere for a short amount of time.

Lots of friends in Uni flats had flat mates that were on erasmus thingys and left after christmas, so it's not unusual at all.

OK so University- Accomodation might be a better choice after all? It's just so incredibly expensive!!! Last year here in Belgium I paid 100 euros per month (about 70 pounds) and this year 235 euros per month (about 160 pounds) so imagine my surprise when I found out those University-rooms cost 80 pounds per WEEK. I almost wish I'd chosen Poland or Slovakia as an Erasmus-destination  Anyway, thanks for your help!

It's not just uni accomodation that's expensive- everywhere in Edinburgh will set you back a bit. But at the end of the day it's a great city and well worth the money- by the end of your Erasmus exchange you'll be kicking yourself for ever considering Poland and Slovakia (no disrespect).
When do you think the accomodation offers will go out?
