Two PhD Studentships on the British press in World War II

The Department of History and Welsh History and the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Aberystwyth University, invite applications for two fully-funded PhD studentships commencing in September 2011, as part of a Leverhulme Trust Research Project on ‘A social and cultural history of the British press in World War II'.

This project will provide the first full critical study of the British press in the Second World War. It will explore the role of the press in its wider social, political and cultural context, place the wartime press within a wider national culture of news, information and entertainment provision, and assess how changes in the relationship between the press, other media and society during the war anticipated the development of mass communications in post-war Britain. The project is led by Dr Sian Nicholas and Professor Tom O'Malley.

Studentship 1 will be based in the Department of History and Welsh History and will focus on the press and wartime political culture, paying particular attention to issues such as national identity, participation, associational life, wartime political debate and dissent, and reconstruction.

Studentship 2 will be based in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, and will focus on the ‘everyday' role of the wartime press, paying particular attention to issues such as class, gender, consumption (including advertising), leisure and entertainment culture.

Both studentships will involve the use of a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis of newspapers as well as research in relevant archives. Dr Nicholas and Professor O'Malley will act as co-supervisors on both doctorates.

Applicants should have an exceptional undergraduate record in modern British history, media and communications studies or a related field, and Master's level research experience in an area relevant to the project. The studentships pay the equivalent of UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance grant of £13,590 each year for a maximum of three years of full-time doctoral study (subject to evidence of satisfactory progress).

University of Wales - Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies

The University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies is located in Aberystwyth, adjacent to the National Library of Wales. It is a dedicated research centre which carries out team-based projects on the languages, literatures, culture and history of Wales and the other Celtic countries. Its standing as a centre of excellence in the field of Celtic Studies was confirmed by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, in which 35% of its work was judged to be of world-leading standard (4*) and 45% to be internationally excellent (3*). It is currently running projects in the following areas: the early history of the Celtic languages, medieval Welsh poetry, Romanticism in Wales 1750-1900, the place-names of Wales, the correspondence of Edward Lhwyd, and stained glass in Wales. The Centre will be taking postgraduate students for the first time in autumn 2011 (subject to confirmation of validation by the University of Wales Research Degrees Board). Students will be supervised by scholars of international renown, and will work alongside postdoctoral fellows in a supportive environment with excellent research facilities. Student services will be provided through collaboration with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (Lampeter campus).

Students may study through the medium of either Welsh or English. Welsh is the normal working language of the Centre, and support will be given to students wishing to learn the language.

Three PhD scholarships are offered for 2011 entry. Each scholarship is for a period of three years, and will cover living expenses (currently £13,590 per annum), full-time UK/EU fees and up to £1,000 per annum for research expenses.

One of the three scholarships is specifically for work on digital humanities in Celtic Studies (in collaboration with the Chair of Digital Collections at the National Library of Wales, Professor Lorna Hughes). PhD Studentship in Modern European History
University of Nottingham - School of History

The School of History, University of Nottingham, invites applications from suitably qualified students for a fully funded PhD Studentship commencing on 1 October 2011. The award will cover fees at UK/EU levels and a maintenance grant in line with AHRC rates, for the duration of three years. In 2010/11 the AHRC maintenance grant was £13,590 per annum. Applications from non-UK/EU candidates will be considered, but they will have to undertake to meet the difference between UK/EU fees and Overseas fees themselves.

Students would normally have completed or be about to complete a Masters in History or a related discipline, with an achieved or predicted grade of Merit or Distinction, and have gained an upper second or first class BA honours degree in a relevant subject.

Students with experience of working in archives and research interests that build on current strengths in modern European cultural history within the School of History are particularly welcome. In particular, through this studentship the School hopes to capitalise on and further develop synergies within an existing lively and international cohort of PhD students at Nottingham who specialise in different aspects of late nineteenth and twentieth century European identity politics, with particular emphasis on space and material and/or visual culture, political uses of history, gender and population policy (including migration), popular mentalities and beliefs, as well as experiences of dictatorship. The studentship accompanies the appointment of Maiken Umbach to a Chair in Modern History, and preference may be given to candidates whose projects may benefit from her supervisory expertise in German, Spanish or comparative European history, c. 1880 to 1945, broadly within the range of thematic approaches outlined above, and with particular emphasis on the uses of material and/or visual culture as evidence.

University College Falmouth is offering 10 full-time studentships, covering fees and a maintenance grant equivalent to the UK Research Councils’, which will develop the Cornish economy. Students will work collaboratively with a local business or public sector partner on a specific project which will be at the cutting edge of research and innovation. The project areas are: storytelling and pro-environmental behaviour; visual art and environmental change; system ‘touch points’ and sustainable tourism; self-aware communicating architecture; surface design for the coastal built environment; culture and social media; landscape and locative media; maritime digital heritage; performing archives; virtual curatorial toolsets.

These three year full-time studentships are part-funded by the European Social Fund and are only open to EU nationals.

We are also offering five part-time PhD studentships, covering fees and a maintenance grant of £5000/annum for four years, with preference given to applications under the two strategic interlinked themes of Sustainable Design and Digital Economy.

All studentships begin in October 2011, with a closing date for applications of 1 July 2011. Interviews are scheduled to take place between 11th and 22nd July.

Winchester School of Art (WSA), University of Southampton, is offering a PhD studentship of £7,000 pa for three years, for a Fine Art researcher to work on a practice-based project, in conjunction with the Centre for Visual Cognition, Department of Psychology.

The Centre for Visual Cognition (CVC) conducts theoretically based empirical research to uncover psychological processing of the visual world. We conduct studies of basic vision and applied vision using multiple experimental techniques to measure eye movements, reaction times and accuracy, and brain activity across different experimental conditions and tasks. By applying appropriate statistical measures, this work uncovers information about visual process across space, time, and mental structure, to reveal how humans apprehend and represent the physical and digital worlds, and how they operate in the realms of image.

The Modes of Address research project, based at WSA aims to identify, codify and achieve greater understanding of the underlying mechanisms of visual imagery. On this basis, the CVC and the School of Art have been developing a significant collaboration over a number of years. The visual nature of the problems explored in the CVC, and the methods used to explore them, have provided the tools with which to carry out objective testing of established theories of art criticism.

Colleagues in the CVC and WSA have thus established the beginnings of a common language to facilitate multi-disciplinarity. We wish to advance this emerging, significant and potentially high-profile collaboration through this jointly supervised postgraduate studentship.

The research to be undertaken will be distinguished by its use of the theories, methods and data generated in the psychological exploration of the visual, as a point of departure for studio art practice. The outcomes will include a body of work for exhibition, and a written thesis, including analysis of audience response to the works presented.

The researcher will have access to a number of different projects being carried out at the CVC, and after an initial period of observation similar to an artist’s residency, will define their own practice-based project. They will have access to facilities at WSA and the CVC.

The Fine Art studentship will engage with research and practice in the Visual Arts subject area, which focuses upon a critical/philosophical engagement with concepts of irresolution, uncertainty and open-endedness.

It places emphasis on those forms of knowledge and research located at the level of process or performance in the act of making. Valuing speculation and risk-taking, as well as emphasizing the productive properties of failure and error, work in this area has investigated performative practices engaging with contemporary spaces; the transgressive potential of the decorative; and the connection of critical pedagogy to the region's social, political and economic networks.
