Barristers Direct Access in Criminal Cases?

Hello ppl,

I'm studying AS law.

I've been taught that Direct Access to baristers for anyone was granted by the bar in Sept 2004 for civil cases and that it's not available for criminal cases.

However lately someone told me, following a review by The Bar, direct access to criminal cases is now available.

The book i'm using was published around 2008.

So basically i was wondering, is direct access available in criminal cases?
If it is when was this review, i can't seem to find any data on this.
