Vet practices in the Midlands

Hi,

I have been applying to veterinary practices for 1-2 weeks voluntary work and am finding it very difficult to find anywhere (also its costing a fortune in stamps :colondollar:

) So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a practice that is happy to take on volunteers/people for work experience in the Midlands? Or if anyone has any contacts they wouldn't mind sharing?

Any help would be great :smile:

I would highly recommend the Ark Veterinary Practice in Stratford-Upon-Avon, it is a mixed veterinary practice with an excellent team, with a really "big family" like atmosphere.Furthermore, the Avonvale Veterinary Group also does work experience, and has a specialised equine clinic at Ratley (It is the best one in the area!). The 608 vet group is also worth a letter, but they have split now in the 608 Farm and Equine and the 608 Small Animal practice, both are excellent practices, but I am not sure if they take work experience anymore :s-smilie:

Where abouts in the midlands? I'm from Nottingham/East Midlands and find it difficult to get placements near home due to Nottingham Vet School seeming to have a bit of a monopoly of the practices there (in fact out of the 20 weeks clinical EMS I have booked/done so far, only 2 of them were in Nottinghamshire at all!) Sorry...I know that's probably not much help, but if you are looking around that area, that might be why you are struggling. :-(

Have you tried Rutland Vets in uppingham??? I did work experience there :smile:

To quote the practice manager of one of the hospital's I've worked at: "We're fed up of taking on teenagers who stand in the corner, faint at the first sight of blood, don't help out at all and say they're bored". If you want to stand a chance you have to stand out by demonstrating that you aren't just another 15/16 year old who suddenly decided come work experience week that they quite like the idea of becoming a vet and playing with animals.

Make sure you detail any relevant work experience in your letter to demonstrate that you are committed/organised/mature/professional/etc. If you haven't already done a couple of weeks on a dairy farm, a couple of weeks at a kennels/cattery and a couple of weeks at a stables/riding school get that first and foremost. You should find it much easier to secure these sorts of placements, you are going to need to get this experience eventually and most practices will be more receptive once you have that experience.

Hi guys, this is a thread from quite a few months ago :smile:

I managed to find some lovely places in the end, but thanks for all the advice and please if anyone would like me to recommend the vet practices I went to in the areas near Nottingham then PM me and i'm happy to share :biggrin:

Im a graduate and made that clear in letters I sent out so I don't think that was the problem for me personally, but its a good point, in fact one of the places I managed to find said the exact same thing about people standing in corners and it made them stop taking people under 16 which is a shame.
