Second year ABS students- need your help pls!

Hi guys.

First year is almost done and I've found the transition from A Levels to University very hard. I couldn't get used to the teaching method and just ended up doing very badly. I'm sure I'll get a 2:2 and won't be able to find a good placement but what's done is done and I know I have to think about the second year.

Could anyone doing any of the following modules download the lecture videos from Aston Replay and email them to me please? I know the modules might change but that's fine, at least I'll be familiar with them and get a head start. I'll be very, very grateful if even one person is able to help me and because of you I might be able to get a good degree.

Modules I need the content for:

Strategic Finance
Business Policy
Business Government and Society

Principles of Criminal Law
Principles of Intellectual Property Law
Principles of Business Law

Theories and Practice of HRM
Psychology and Work

I know it might take a bit of time to download the videos but you won't know how much you've helped me. I need to get a good headstart if I want to do well in the second year. If you'd like, I'd be willing to meet up with you and buy you a drink!

Thanks guys

Hi Jenny,

I don't have any of the material im afraid but, if it helps I didn't do too well in my first year but found once I started the specialised modules which I was more interested in and smaller classes my grades ended up in 80's. Don't feel too disheartened

For Business policy all i know is that the core text is Exploring Strategy by Prof Gerry Johnson, Prof Richard Whittington and Prof Kevan Scholes, as i will be studying the module next year in oct 2012. and for strategic finance, if you want ive got a friend who studied the module last year so ill find out for you.

Hi there,

I know exactly what you mean - the transition from A level to a degree is very difficult and I struggled in my first year. Don't let it get you down though! I got 54% in my first year and have just graduated with a 2:1, and some of my friends have made much better improvements

You will be surprised how much you learnt in first year. One of the key reasons why first year rarely counts towards a degree is because it's much more important that you learn the way in which you learn! It sounds weird, but once you get into second year you'll feel much more at home with everything.

The best advice I can give is just to try and keep up! I found the best method of learning is to go to the lectures having not prepared in advance, and take notes of everything that sounds important - then you can go back and compare to the slides, find out what you think you need to work more on and work on that. Don't be afraid of the lecturers either - most of them really want you to do well, and as long as you are able to show that you are interested and putting the effort in they will be more than happy to help where they can.

You will get a good placement, don't worry! Just start looking early in October, and apply to as many as possible. You will get rejections, and you will get companies not responding! But most importantly you will build experience - you'll start to learn the key words and phrases that employers look for, and you'll start to build up experience of the application process. It took me 26 applications to get my placement - I secured it one week before I finished second year, but it was absolutely the best year of my career.

If there is anything I can help with do please ask and I'll be more than willing to help  If you're worried about placements I'll be happy to have a look at your application/CV and provide suggestions, or to share the same from my history of applications (don't forget to keep them ALL- you'll thank yourself for it  ).

The best thing to remember is that it will never hurt you to ask for help! University is a weird experience for some, because it isn't really about teaching - it's about you learning something you're interested in, and for some that's difficult to get to grips with initially - but everyone gets used to it in the end
