8.9 earthquake in Indonesia, tsunami warnings issued for Indian Ocean

So far, there seem to have been 14 aftershocks of Magnitude 5.0 or greater (including the M8.2 one) but these mostly seem to have involved lateral movement of the earth's crust so there was never any real likelihood of a tsunami on the same scale as the 2004 one. That involved vertical movement of the crust which is why such a huge volume of water was displaced.

Still very worrying for everyone in the area, though.

Got a few mates in Thailand, the said they felt the earthquake and everybody started shutting up shops and running for the hills. No tsunami yet though.

I would have thought the tsunami would have reached the shore by now if one was created...
