Should the 'women and children first' rule still apply when a ship is sinking?

Without ever having being in this situation, here's how I think most guys would react (including me):

first save MY kids
then save MY wife
then save ME

and screw the rest...

as selfish as that sounds, I'm not sure a husband would be ready to see his wife die for some random kids...

some husbands may be ready to stay on the sinking ship, but no way they'd let their family stay too

from a woman's point of view I have no idea though
I think children should always be saved first, then women and men equally. I think the elderly should come last, because they've lived their lives, and are probably not going to contribute much to society, unlike men, women and children.

children first certainly, but women? we are supposed to have equal rights, so I don't see why they should have priority. if I am not going to give my place to a man who is considered equal to me, why should I give my place to a woman who is considered equal to me?
I think places should go to those with the most potential for life: children, though it seems rather unfair to leave them all parentless so I'd let all mothers go with them.

I'm hopeful that all guys on my ship would be decent enough to give their place to a woman (until all women are aboard, then: free for all  )

But I doubt they would, peoples instinct for self preservation kind of takes over in such circumstances...

Anyways, there should be enough spaces for everyone. The people who die in such disasters these days are normally those caught onboard, or killed by fire/falling objects etc...

If you have 1 woman and 100 men you can have about 10 children, max. 1 man and 100 women and you can have about 1000 children, max.

Just saying.

I think this ^ would cause a riot for who could be the man to do his duty to save the species... ending up with a whole lot of men taking places by force, leaving no-where for the women...

How the hell is it nice?

Also, how is a women life more important?

Oh dear, someone is a little confused.

care to clarify what you're saying?
No chance, I'd be kicking babies and throwing frail old woman out the way like it was nobodies business. Then I'd take get a life boat and throw everyone out so they weren't stealing my air!

Well if that's your way of thinking I would expect you to give up your right to vote, whatever man you marry should be able to own you and do what he like with you, you should give up your right to work as you have to stay inside and look after the kids.

You can't have it both ways

Yes because a woman can reproduce without a man

they have sex with the children once they have grown up!

lucky kids...

you should change your name to 'like a coward'.

Wanting to survive makes you a coward?
It depends on the person's age. Those that are retired, nearing retirement or are near the beginning of their education e.g. 5 years old should be left till last. This is because they have less of the state's money invested in them. Wasting a healthy 21 year old just entering the workforce would be idiotic as no return on all those years of investment will be made.

1st. Children
2nd. Men and Women together
3rd. Bankers/Politicians/Union Bosses
It's essentially irrelevant - ships sink with considerably less frequency than they did a hundred years ago, their crews are trained to an impossibly high standard (at least with Western merchant navies) enabling orderly and prompt evacuations, there are comprehensive safety briefings for every new intake of passengers on a cruise, and there's now more than enough lifeboats on just about every cruise ship to accommodate the entire crew.

What did I say was nice, and where did I say it?!

Nor did I say women were more important! About not leaving children parentless, you gotta agree that in general, the mother is likely to be more caring towards the child. Though maybe they should be given the choice: "Okay, children first, which parent would you like to save young man?" methinks an unfair decision for a young child...

About the giving places to women, it's not that they're lives are necessarily more important. (Men probably do just as much for society).
Call me old fashioned, but I just think that the women should be saved first. Just seems more "right" to me...

You suggest a better system. (note system rather than just "save me, don't care who else")

I guess it really depends on the situation if you are going to be starnded on some island with no hope of ever meeting civilisation like the movie 2012 then I would say men are pretty important to be able to reproduce! a healthy mix of people.

lot's of utilitarianism on this thread

it's not that us singletons should be doomed, rather decent human beings would rather give up their place for others like children and their parents perhaps?

or how about an age limit, everyone under 30 lives.

ouch harsh, if i was there with my parents/family i wouldn't go anywhere without them

Quiet woman! When you're in a life or death situation you aren't gonna think about crap like being a decent human being. Just leave that 'honour' and 'respect' nonsense to fairy tales, this is the real harsh world we live in.

Don't be surprised to see a fully grown healthy man push a woman and her baby out of the way in order to survive. Its just his survival instinct kicking in.

Yeah. I'm a guy.

And I don't think that women shouldn't be equal to men. Just when it comes down to who should be saved, I'd do the generous thing and give the spaces to the ladies.
