Do you really an ssd at the moment? I would expect everything to be much cheaper by than,

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (ÂŁ173.94 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard (ÂŁ76.52 @ Scan.co.uk)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Grey 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (ÂŁ38.16 @ Scan.co.uk)
Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint M8 320GB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (ÂŁ37.09 @ Amazon UK)
Hard Drive: Intel 330 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk (ÂŁ82.94 @ Scan.co.uk)
Video Card: MSI Radeon HD 6850 1GB Video Card (ÂŁ83.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Case: Zalman Z11 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case (ÂŁ47.98 @ Scan.co.uk)
Power Supply: Corsair 600W ATX12V Power Supply (ÂŁ52.36 @ Ebuyer)
Optical Drive: Sony AD-7280S-0B DVD/CD Writer (ÂŁ12.88 @ CCL Computers)
Total: ÂŁ605.86
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

Is that spec any better?
I was trying to include an SSD as I thought it would improve gaming performance, expecially with games like Skyrim that have a large map environment that is constantly loading?

Think I might have to just try and find the parts on the actual shop websites as I had a quick look on overclockers and a very similar spec was actually cheaper than Partpickers "lowest" price???

It's better to get things separately, partpickers isn't always up to date.
Try looking at the crucial m4 for an ssd.
Hi all! Great thread!

I'm looking to get a new netbook/ultrabook (I've heard about Chromebooks but because they're fairly new I'm not too sure about them.. But if they're anything like the browser then they must be great)

I've got a 3ish yo HP Mini 700, but it's too slow for words now

I'm not a gamer at all, but I'm a bigg streamer (TV etc) and I've got an external 64GB SD card because my netbook came with a pitiful 32GB of memory.. I'm doing medicine at uni so I don't really need any massive programs. Budget.. I dunno, under ÂŁ600? (I'm planning to sell my netbook on eBay, and put the money towards this)
Edit: Also needs to be quite light! -Books are heavy enough

Thanks in advance!!!

Hey thanks for your reply!

I have a Toshiba Satellite at home (a laptop -C660) and I hate it, the best way I can describe it is 'cantankerous' haha

Dyou think 4GB of RAM is enough?

Yer its plenty.
Would this (http://www.ebuyer.com/192111-ocz-fatal1ty-series-550w-modular-psu-ocz550fty-uk) PSU handle a x4 965 processor and 6850/6870? or would it be a safer bet to get one with a bit more wattage - trying not to be stingy with the psu putting together a build, but won't have a lot to play around with and this seems pretty good value for a modular.

550 watt is enough for all that, though it will struggle with a crossfire if you ever plan to upgrade the graphics.
Everything else is fine. And you got the connectors to attach for the 6870
Anyone bought/recommend buying second hand computer parts? Mainly CPU and Motherboard?

Should I get a laptop from pcspecialist.com?
I'd like to get a high end laptop for about 1000 pounds

They are good for price..........though I would be careful for the reason for sale, also whether they've done any overclocking.

They are ok, I would say come up with your own build there, then see if you can get anything better from the likes of Lenovo, etc
Someone recommend me a good computer case, with enough space and room for cable management and airflow.

Something sleek rather than a gaming look, max ÂŁ50

What do you guys think? The power supply is sold out in a few places so not sure if there could be a better one?

And still undecided on Graphics card. The one quoted to me by Iqbal007 was 180, (I think?) is that the kinda price I'm looking at or is there a half-decent cheaper one?

And generally, is this all compatible, any suggestions/replacements etc? Thank you guys so much, you are all amazing!!
Finally sorted my PC, been round in circles but its up and running, nice a quick.

Thinking what to install, does anyone do computing degree here?

I've got so far

Win 7 64 Bit
Office 2010
Avast!

Here's a list of things you might want to install now if you haven't already. Just ask if you want any specific recommendations.

A decent browser, music library manager, archive (un)compressor, PDF reader, Torrent client, backup programme, FTP client, codecs, video player, Flash, Java, Notepad replacement, drivers and utilities.

UND is right, also my uni uses fedora, which I do prefer for programming, got used to it.
VLC is the best video player, and you need loads of codecs

I know :frown: I looked at cases for like 5 days solid, only ones I liked were still around the 100 mark so I thought I might as well go for that one since I can't get it out my head. I really really love it!

And nope, won't be doing any gaming
