Logic - IQ - Trick Questions - Mind games - Intelligent thinking - Questions Wanted!

Has anyone got questions that require some abstract thinking, sort of like IQ test or mind games etc.

here are some examples of what im looking for:

1. at the end of a dinner, 10 people shake hands with each other, how many handshakes in total?

or like this:

2. Which scenario gives you the best chance of survival?
-Flip 5 tails in a row or get your head cut off
-Roll snake eyes or eat cyanide for dinner
-Roll a 7 twice in a row or be drawn and quartered
-Get dealt 2 aces (standard 52 card deck; 2 cards dealt) or jump from the top of the Empire State Building

etc.

1. 90
2. The 5 tails in a row has 1/32 chance, the dice related options have 1/36 chance, and the cards has an almost nothing chance. So...I'd take the dice

1. 45
2. 5 tails in a row
1. is not 45 surely? the general nomenclature for this type of q is n(n-1) so 10*(10-1) = 90

Person A can shake hands with 9 people
Person B can shake hands with 8 people since hes already shaken As hand.
Person C can shake hands with 7 people etc etc

I think any way, probs wrong though

You need to factor in the chance that the cyanide will pass through your system without killing you!

Nope^, correct. answer is 0.5*9*(9-1)=36.

Yeah that is wrong

Person's 1-10 can all shake hands with 9 people. The others don't just vanish! You just cannot shake hands with yourself.

It's n(n-1) for questions like this.

yeah but there will be handshakes that are completed twice

Ahh indeed, what is the general formula, everyone shakes hands with another once, minus oneself which one does not...

How? Surely it's 45...
assuming handshakes are not iterated
yeah but whats the general formula?
Reply 15
if 10 people shake hands, there are 5 handshakes!
would 0.5*n(n-1) work for n people?

this is an intelligent thinking thread, not just simply remembering a formula.

but yeah its 0.5n(n-1)
