argh! how much volunteering is everyone doing?

i have no idea how much i need! some people with very little seem to do ok, while some with absolutely loads dont get in! (even though the rest of their applications is fine)

My friend who got into Cambridge did a week in a hospital, just under a year of voluntary work in an elderly peoples community centre and a four week science research programme in the summer holiday.

Hey Guys,

Im currently in year 12 and i was wodering whether i should take the extended project next year? i didnt take it this year and now im thinking i made a mistake. Im doing biology, chemistry maths and german and i thought that i would prefer to focus on them only. So should i do it? do univerisities prefer candidates who have it as a qualification?

thank you

was the science research a nuffield bursary? If so I was going to do one too, but ive planned my time badly, so i cant because i basically NEED that time for work exp

Otherwise, would i be correct in saying that he appears to have done below the average amount of work exp and voluntary work for a successful applicant?

Km so we need some categories:

We already have Most Geekiest Member any others? Perhaps an Amoeba based one?

Can't believe I nearly made up 20% - I must have been talking to myself half the time :P

Do Amoeba have reproductive systems?

I think you'd win the Amoeba category

No. He was about average if not above. This is TSR and the haven for over neurotic medicine applicants- I would imagine over half of people n this thread will get an offer first time round com oared to about 3/10 normally.

So what should the title for the Ameoba award be? How about the 'most likely to be an Amoeba' award?

There should be a happiest member,
Most neurotic member,
Best mod/non applicant.

Any more?

And I am liking your new sig.

very good point, the people on tsr are highly unlikely to be representative of the population, at least i hope not, considering some of the people on here
I'll think of some categories tomorrow, I like making lists  but I'm in town during the day so it'll probably be in the evening.

It's definately worth doing it can show real independence and interest in the subject. Ots also very well respected: everyone I know who got into Oxford or Cambridge from my college had done the Extended Project.

We start it now so we take the majority of the work over the summer, after the premature end of term due to exams. This was we can put it in the personal statement. However, it's worth doing anyway as the Extended Project isn't just about the PS. You could bring it up at interview or just holding to yourself for the interest so you can develop your knowledge for yourself. In Amy case it's worth UCAS points so is worth it for applying to medical schools such as Bart and the London who are now judging applicants by UCAS points.

This might be interesting for some of you to appreciate the work of nurses.

I saw this, the way some nurses get treated :frown:

Erm cardiology cause I think the heart is amazing, would love to specialise in it and my grandad died of a heart condition that could of been treated if diagnosed
Plastics because I think its fascinating and Id love to be an army medic specialising in that. this may change when I get to Uni though

Ah yes, the EPQ that I'm not allowed to do until A2 year, and only then if I drop a subject which currently isn't the plan (grades dependent). At times I really do hate my college :/

Have you tried GPs? If you can't get in at a GP, then it might be worth putting yourself on the list for the start of September. However, if you feel you have enough to say about your one week, then that's all that matters

Well, thank you for the vote

Thing is that' after the deadline date for our applications, so I won't be able to put in my statement. And I have nothing to put in statement atm :s-smilie:
