Advice needed for a 2012 fresher!

Hiya,

Sheff Hallam will be my firm choice for uni starting this september and if I get the grades (fingers crossed) I'm looking forward to a fresh start in 2012. I go to a nearby college in South Yorkshire and have my own set of friends many of whom are older and in full time work, so im not as used to regularly socialising with people my own age as much. This has left me a little but nervous and with a few questions that need answering. Any feedback would be appreciated:

Where do you tend to make new friends, Halls? through your course? Or through clubs you join? Or just on random nights out?

Any tips for making friends?

Any halls people would reccomend?

I will be 20 by the time I start and as mentioned above most of tmy best friends range from 25-40, will the lifestyle change be a bit of a shock for me?

With me being used to the sheffield area should I reccomend places for people to go on a nightout or take more of a backseat and go with the flow?

hey , well obviously you will make friends with your flatmates and neighbors as you will like see them everyday and with this they will bring friends to have flat parties and stuff so you get to meet them also.

Yes you will also make friends from your course as you will be with them also most days. people normally create a facebook group for your seminar group and arrange course nights out.

you will also meet a lot of people from clubs as I am in a sports team myself and you will be training, travelling to games and going on nights out with each other after your games so again you will make friends that way.

with the random people that you meet on nights out and add on facebook. hmmm it differs really because i have met some people and kept in contact and others where I dont speak to them at all soo it differs.

some tips on making friends, just be yourself and try to socialise with everyone. start off with the simple such as asking their name, what course they do and where there from and have a conversation from there.

I would recommend Victoria Hall as I think it is the best halls out of them all. it wont really be a shock to you really as you are only going to be like 2 years older than others.
You say your from sheffield so that is great. you should definately tell people the best clubs and the best nights. this can create a good convo. but obviously dont overdo it.

Dont worry you will be fine

I'm hoping to go to Hallam in September as a mature student living at home too, having already done a first degree the uni friends I made that I'm still friends with now are all people I had lectures with! Obviously you'll make friends with some of your hall mates too and make sure to check out the clubs and societies as they're always good places and you'll already have something in common which helps!

I made friends in freshers week with the people who I lived with and the people in my block... then as time went on i started to go out with my course more (i sometimes bring my flat mates, as do other people, so you meet more new people) and just go from there really. I havnt joined any groups or anythin, dont have the time!

Hey, I was in a similar situation when I came here, I was 20 and most of my mates were a few years older. There's no real trick to meeting people, you just have to put yourself out there and be open to meeting new people. I live in devonshire courtyard at the moment, compare it to the other halls and it's pretty basic, but compared to where many of my friends live, it's by far one of the most social.

My closest friend from uni, I met over our halls page on facebook and just asked if anyone wanted to go for a drink, also leaving your room door open and knocking on peoples flat doors worked quite well for me (My flat is kind of split, but thats by their own choice but we all have a large group of friends in other flats who we spend time with). I'm also really close to my course mates, but our course (Sports Science for Performance Coaching) only contains around 25 of us, but we have a great group who will spend days together and go on nights out, once again I know that some of my other friends have made a good group of friends off their course.

Just put yourself out there, be open to meeting new people, I had the same worries as you and personally I wish I could be doing it all over again because I've met a lot of great people and had one of the best years of my life!
I was awkward as **** before I arrived in Sheffield, but now I know so many people and have made friends in all sorts of different ways.

For now, I suggest doing what everybody did when I joined and add as many other freshers on facebook as possible through the freshers pages and make conversation/arrange to meet up with them.

Also, Corporation is a surprisingly good place to meet people. Trust me on this guys.

Im not shy when it comes to making conversation so I guess that will help... been to corp a few times n I can't stand it. It stunk, was the filthiest place Ive ever been drinking in n the music was not particularly my taste, me n my mates didnt last long in there... but each to their own I guess. I tend to enjoy most places I go in Sheff, corp just wasnt my scene I guess.

That's what we love about Corp. Hehe.

I personally consider it to be more of a hang-out place than a club, to be honest, so I have been quite a lot of times in the past.

I think I must have have made half of my friends there. Partly when we were all drunk, I must admit. :P

But on the subject of meeting people, it's easy as piss to make friends around here. So it's all good.

To be fair its cheap and it was a fairly decent pint in there despite its low price... but I was with a different crowd last time I went. Maybe if I went back with a few students of a similar age I may enjoy it more

Well it is a pretty gritty and horrible place at first. I've just been so many times that it doesn't bother me, I guess. Hehe.

And it doesn't take long to get drunk there.

If I remember correctly however the only lager in offer was carlsberg which is practically like tap water... but yeah very cheap! I'm sure I'll end up in there at somepoint during freshers
