Rape - why, and Porn.

I'm just curious really to hear from the guys point of view, in that, criminal psychologists suggest that rape is performed to induce a feeling of power and control for the rapist. Do you believe it is about this?

Secondly, take a hardcore porn movie, for example, some of the scenes (I've seen personally), where the woman is in a very subservient and submissive position, receiving what could be perceived as abusive hard penetrative sex. Im sure you know what i mean, lol. My boyfriend has seen a lot of harcore porn, and he does at times, re-enact scenes from these movies, in that he likes to literally be rough, to the point where it hurts/holds my neck etc. Now, I consent this, and he doesn't hurt me to the point I want him to stop, but I do wonder if these hardcore porno's depict very rough penetrative sex (where the woman facially demonstratively shows pain; i know she is acting) to be a massive turn on/normal?

I'm not one of these feminatzi's at all, because i like being submissive myself, but for rapists and the guys role in hardcore porno's, it appears to be about control and power....

I would consider any man that has seen the more severe end of (A pornographic website which I am not allowed to name but you probably know it) output and not thought 'oh...that...that's quite...oh no' to have gone too far on the hardcore pornography scale.

Incidentally, if anyone would like to see the scale please let me know. Suffice it to say that it shares quite a lot of features with the Glasgow Coma Scale.

Are you trying to imply that people that watch these kinds of porn scenes are more likely to be rapists?

I'd tend to disagree - you only have too look at the past when brothels and "street women" were prevalent for easy consensual action and yet still women were largely attacked/raped.

If anything porn is helping to keep it contained to homes/toilet cubicals.

Like the previous poster, if they're watching the more rougher stuff without feeling anything hit pleasure there's probably an underlying psychological condition - dysfunctional childhood for instance, abusive dad etc.

I saw a porn once where the woman started crying. It was disturbing. Turned it off. Makes me wonder who the market is for that kind of stuff - it's hard to believe that level of dominance gives a person pleasure. I suppose it might be the same feeling that the pursuit of which causes a person to commit rape? I'm not sure of much of the psychology behind what causes a person to rape, so this is just my speculation.

Some guys are turned on by dominance, so they are probably more likely to have very rough sex with women, but to be honest all porn is doing is helping them realise what their fantasies are helping them to feel more comfortable with what they like. Rape and rough sex is very different, we're always told that rape is done not for pleasure but for the power and control they gain, rough sex tends to be done for pleasure rather than the power/control (though this may be hat causes the pleasure; depends on the person).
But if you don't like dominance, watching hardcore porn isn't going to make you do it, it'll probably make you realise 'okay, I don't like that, I won't do it'. Porn helps you discover your likes and dislikes in a controlled way so you don't end up having a bad experience from trying something that it turns out you don't like.

As long as you both enjoy or are into it, then it is probably healthy. Dominance and submission can be liberating to both parties. It sounds as though you have some reservations though. It may be because this sort of thing can also sometimes be about degradation. Many of the types of porn you are referring to are specifically about that. To those who would disagree with me, I would challenged them to argue that when a man goes straight from a girls bum and into her mouth that the intention is to dominate instead of defile.

My personal opinion is if his sexual appetite is related to his desire to degrade you, then you have cause for concern.

People have all kinds of fetishes when it comes to sex. As long as what you're doing satisfies you, involves only consenting people and is healthy - I see no reason to declare it abnormal or wrong. I know it's actually quite common for people to find it sexually gratifying when they're willingly put in situations such as yours. If you have a problem with it just tell your boyfriend

Allow me to quote briefly from Laskey v United Kingdom (which you may be lucky enough to read in full when you're a law student! Yay!)

8. In 1987 in the course of routine investigations into other matters, the police came into possession of a number of video films which were made during sado-masochistic encounters involving the applicants and as many as 44 other homosexual men. As a result the applicants, with several other men, were charged with a series of offences, including assault and wounding, relating to sado-masochistic activities that had taken place over a 10-year period. One of the charges involved a defendant who was not yet 21 years old—the age of consent to male homosexual practices at the time. Although the instances of assault were very numerous, the prosecution limited the counts to a small number of exemplary charges.

The acts consisted in the main of maltreatment of the genitalia (with, for example, hot wax, sandpaper, fish hooks and needles) and ritualistic beatings either with the assailant's bare hands or a variety of implements, including stinging nettles, spiked belts and a cat-o'-nine tails. There were instances of branding and infliction of injuries which resulted in the flow of blood and which left scarring.

Ouch.

I think porn has affected teenage boys and indeed many men's views of sex and what is OK to expect to do with a girl or young woman. If porn was not available at all or as much I think there would be fewer sexual assualts on women.

I think you are talking a load of old ****.

I think the real damage porn does, it that it teaches people poor technique because porn is not for the pleasure of the actors, it is for the benefit of the viewer.

Don't blame it on a form of media, chances are if your boyfriend seems to be misogynistic or awfully pushy about these things then he's most likely just a dick. Nothing to do with porn.
It's supply and demand, not a conspiracy to increase the amount of potential rapists.

I hope I'm lucky enough to read that! Law sounds like it's going to be far more interesting than I first considered :colone: I would rule that unhealthy; actually maltreating each other to the extent of permanent physical injury suggests psychological problems in my book. Some people enjoy pain, but that seems quite extreme.

They should be given a psychological examination, not a sentence :lolwut:

I think rape happens because of how men and women get aroused. Most rape tends to happen when the couple have gone through certain social norms that precede sex and the man becomes seriously aroused. For whatever reason, the woman is not so aroused. And once the man is aroused he tends to lose control.

The genuinely alarming thing is that I suspect a lot of guys have the capacity to be rapists under the right conditions, which is why you hear of those stories of a normal guy who ends up raping somebody. And people say "I cannot believe he did that".

And frankly, that scares me. That I know, that I deep down that I probably have the capacity to rape (unlike all these guys who say "I would never do that" - who are honestly in denial). But atleast with the realisation that I probably do have the capacity to rape, I can probably avoid doing it, because I am explicitly aware of the facts.

I just think this is tosh.

Part of domination is power and control. That is the fun of it. That one party is essentially "****ed" to use the term literally.

And rape is not done for power and control, it is done for sexual gratification.

Not neccessarily, I think that what is normal for one person is abnormal for another. It's an incredibly difficult area to find a bright line boundary in. We allow people to consent to some actual bodily harms such as smoking, why not a wee fishook through the scrotum? While that is a little bit facetious why shouldn't someone be allowed to consent to being beaten with nettles? It's not my thing, but it is somone's. It's like if someone tried to suck my feet. They'd wake up on a drip. But no one is arguing that should be illegal.

It also gives those who watch it unrealistic expectations of what women (and men!) should look like and how 'mind-blowing' sex actually is. The awful thing is a lot of young people learn about sex via porn instead of at school. Because so much of the porn industry is made up of dodgy hardcore clips that have no real storyline and show no intimacy between the 'characters', if they can be called that, I think teens are conditioned into thinking this is what real sex is like. Both males and females think the hardcore stuff they see on the internet is what SHOULD turn them on - pornography is someone else's fantasies after all, not your own. I do think this contributes to sexual attacks against women, however it is definitely not the only factor.
I don't think porn causes rape in itself; but in people who already have the capacity to rape the viewing of violent pornography can exacerbate the desire to carry out these acts irl.

Such as. Ridiculous penises. Massive tits. A guy that gets 3 blow jobs and ****s 4 girls for 45 mins and still doesnt cum (just cut and paste the whole thing together). Anal sex without barely enough lubrication. Stupid scenes licking pussy as if it were some kind of callipo. etc.

If this was even remotely true, then with the advent of free porn online we should have seen the a HUGEEEEE increase in the amount of rape compared to say the 1990's when porn was much harder to access.

Have we seen an increase in rape?

No.

**** all has happened.

The amazing thing about porn, is just how much there is nowadays, and how little effect it has actually had.
