If you look at the big Volvo's be careful, although most of them run I a lot of the £300 ones have all sorts of problems. You would be much better of spending £1000 on a nice 1992 940 with good service history, 130kish all the working electrics, little rust, a car like that will last for ever.

The Cavalier 8valves are also good but the bodies tend to rust as youngest are now 13 years old.

The Volvo 740 is also worth a look, the 440's are not proper volvos as they are built in the DAF factory in the Netherlands but the stop spec ones like JC's are nice motors.

The 240 is probably a bit too old and basic to bother with,.

I don't know much at all about Disco's other than the earlier ones suffered a lot of electrical problems.

BX's are ok but they are not tank like machines. What about the Audi 80, mid 80;s Merc E class (forget the official name). All built like tanks, can do 500,000 miles, don't rust much, have classic appeal, are safe and dirt cheap to buy.

Volvo 850 T5, goes like **** off a shovel and looks damn good imo. More realistically to be able to get reasonable insurance what about early 90's escorts or even rover 400s.

Volvos will cost a lot to insure, they're big heavy and designed to last in an impact. Which means the other car/human/listed building suffers considerable damage. Which makes insurers upset.

Something that looks tough but crumples into a small ball when hit is more insurable.

Citroen XM is huge, tank like and very eccentric. Citroen Xantia is more manageable and almost as eccentric. But both would probably cost a fair amount to insure. They're cheap because the hydraulic suspension scares the crap out of people. As long as it's serviced properly (by an independent citroen garage or dealership, once yearly) they should be fine.

Turbo-diesels will cost more to insure due to weight and to an extent power. Non-turbo diesels aren't worth looking at unless you want something pretty sluggish and dated.

Thats the last Punto, It'll lose value like very little else and it's really a pretty dated car. Far too little for the money.

Any reason why Automatic cars are cheaper than Manual?

Good automatics will cost more than the manual, a fairly cheap automatic shoved on a tiny 3 cylinder engine will just serve to blunt performance, fuel economy and reliability. Avoid that Corsa like the plague.

Both poor deals I'm afraid.

With the BX, the 1.9 non turbo is the same insurance as a 1.7 turbo. The XM is quite expensive. Xantia is the replacement for the BX, but doesn't have quite the same character.

Ive just bought a Volvo 850 GLT.
2.0 litre 5 cylinder engine cost me 500 notes which is about what its costing to insure as it happens!
Its a pity it isnt an estate model as it would be even more practical. The 5 cylinder engine has certainly got a lot of mid-range grunt. Its not terribly quick off the mark though but, being the bottom of the range engine in a big car its not likely to be.

You cant complain @ electric everything, leather seats, air con, heated mirrors etc for 500 notes though. Even if it is "tart red"! lol!

740's have a straight six. Its a lumbering boat anchor of an engine. They get about 15mpg round town and not much better than 26 ish on a run.
A 740 is NOT worth a look at all.

My Volvo is an 850 GLT, bottom of the range in terms of engine spec but its a range topper in terms of all the toys it's got. + it was nailed together in europe not over here unlike the 440.

Can you not get diesels versions of the 740? My uncle used to have one, I am sure it was the 740 and it was diesel but I may well be getting mixed up, it was a 1984 B reg, this was in the early 90's so my member has probably faded.

For some reason I thought you had a 440 not the 850 (again my memory has gone) :p:

The toys are great, it is one thing I like about my car, if I am bored you can just press the electric seat buttons up and down, its the a pitty the engine sounds like it belongs in a tractor though.
