Can someone explain to me how you find the minimum and maximum point/value in a graph?

There are various ways

Are you studying GCSE or A Level

GCSE, I'm not sure how to do it, I don't know if its as simple as just looking for the minimum value of Y..

You need to complete the square

y=(xa)2+by = (x-a)^2 + b

Has a minimum point at (a,b)

If the graphs equation was y=x^2-3x-1, how would you find the minimum value of Y?

x22px+q=(xp)2+qp2x^2 - 2px + q = (x-p)^2 + q - p^2

So could you show me how you would work this one out x^2-14x+63=

It may be easy to you, but that doesn't give you the right to imply/insult another member.

I'm sorry, it is just that I have had to teach myself this in the space of 1 week, the whole edexcel syllabus. The fact that he has more than likely had a lot more time is just ridiculous, he only starts caring when we are one day away from the exam:angry:

Woaho, calm down people, exam is today, just relax and do as best as you can. Remember, do the questions that you are confident with first.
I'm closing this thread now to reduce the temptation for people to discuss how the paper before the embargo ends at midnight.
