Could someone clarify what an unsaturated molecule is?
I just did an AQA mod 3 paper, and it said "state what is meant by an unsaturated compound".
I said not all the bonds are single bonds, but according to the mark scheme the answer had to positive, and their answer was "contains atleast one double bond". Surely a molecule with a triple bond would be unsaturated too though
you're correct - a triple bond is unsaturated, even more so than a double bond. Think of unsaturation in a molecule as having one or more pi systems and a saturated molecule having all sigma bonds. To satisfy the examiner i suggest you write - a molecule containg one or more pi systems (e.g. double bonds)
