i don't think anyone should be able to get it from the pharmacy, there's a reason why you have to go to a GP/family planning clinic.

13 year olds can get it from a doctor. if they're not mature enough to go and ask a doctor, they're not mature enough to have sex.

Why not? What's the reason?

Although I do agree with your second point.

Let's not forget that under-age sex is meant to be illegal. Thus you are technically creating a contradiction in your statement. The government should be doing more to enforce the law (no under-age sex) rather than trying to prevent the consequences of it. You'll find that both prevent the problem of under-age conception, but only one prevents the emotional/social impact of the pill on people (who are essential just 'kids').

What a stupid idea, the pill for 13-year olds??? You can see why society has become so corrupt.
Just by going to a pharmacy? I think at least they should have to have check-ups by their GP before and regularly afterwards just like the rest of us!
Sadly they should. At the end of the day they're going to be doing it anyway so it's only sensible to allow them to have access to the pill.

I really don't understand why people talk about today's society as being full of sex and innuendo like it's a new thing. When I was young Madonna's sex book was all the rage and there were programmes like Eurotrash and the Channel 5 soft-core pornos that were shown late at night. All of these were staple viewing at all girl sleepovers with somebody sat by the TV in case a parent came in to the room!

The only difference is everything is now completely digitised, instead of someone bringing in a dirty magazine and everyone going to look at in the bushes, kids now have it on their phones.

It is severely ignorant to just ignore the fact that young teenagers are drawn to activities of a sexual nature. We should be working towards changing the under age law to avoid criminalising fourteen and fifteen year olds and spending more time giving good quality sex education in schools from an earlier age. People say that it will encourage young people to start having sex earlier but I feel it's entirely up to the individual, just as their are kids that choose not to smoke or drink, there are kids that choose not have sex, but the ones that do shouldn't be vilified for their choices.
As if kids aren't going to be shagging anyway if you don't give them the pill...

Yeah, they should get it. Better to have more kids having sex early than more kids having babies early...

...maybe because they are children ?
The fact that many kids would die from simply being pregnant at that age shows that it is unnatural.
Teenagers or not, they are still children and doing something that most kids their age do not feel the need to, and it is not coincidence that these kids always come from broken homes or bad family lives.

Well the kids you know are going to end up screwballs and their parents are ****ing stupid to think that what they are doing is normal and healthy.

No - giving the pill to 13 year olds is advocating sex for that age group as you are telling them that it if you do happen to have sex, you can buy this, thus we think that you might have sex. Not giving them the pill is a clear sign that the law and state does not want them, or plans on them having sex at that age.

The problem is why are children wanting to have sex when they are clearly not physically or emotionally ready for it.

People of all ages can die from pregnancy. Many animals die due to pregnancy at a young age, would you class nature itself as unnatural? Surely this supports my view that 13 year old girls should be allowed the pill, so they don't become pregnant and (in very few cases) die?

Most kids don't feel the need to empathize with others, does this mean children who do possess desirable qualities such as compassion and understanding should be ostracized by their peers? Many pregnant teenagers do not come from broken families, you're stereotypical views show how ignorant and prejudiced you are.

The "kids" I know are unlikely to become benefit scroungers, because they don't come from broken families and get fairly average grades. Having sex underage is not normal in the sense that most people underage don't have sex, but that does not mean you have the right to judge others based on what they do behind closed doors.

Giving the pill to 13 year old girls is not, I repeat, is not in any way, shape or form encouraging them to have sex. Not giving them the pill will lead to higher teenage pregnancies, which will do more harm to society than doing the right thing and letting them use contraception when having sex.

Why does it matter if the teenagers are emotionally ready? Everybody makes mistakes, and most people learn from those mistakes and become better people.
yes! if they've got as far as asking for the pill, they're gonna do it with or without it!

well when you go to the doctor they explain all the risks and side effects to you, and any other options. sometimes the pill isn't best option for everyone, and a 13 year old may not know there are other, possibly better, options for them. after all, it's not a sweet they're taking every day - they're actually altering the natural state of their body and they need to understand the implications of that.

also, the risks are greater for long-term takers of the pill. so if they start at 13, it could increase risks when they're older. they at least need to be told about that first!
Is this life?!
honestly, I've been on the pill since a week after my 14th birthday to help with pms etc and I haven't been running around having underage sex
the pill should always be only offered through a GP or a family planning clinic, even when the pill is being taken for purely medical reasons (i.e spots, pms, other things) they go into thorough descriptions and multiple checks. You get all the risks and possible complications explained to you and because you have to sit and listen, it's not like you just get handed a leaflet you can throw away.
I think if there are 13 year olds who are having sex or anything, at least they're being responsible and informed enough to know how to prevent pregnancy?..

Sorry if this side of the debate has been covered but:

Lets face it, if a 13 year old girl has decided that she wants to have sex she will probably do it with or with out protection anyway. 13 year old girls tend to be quite naive and even at this day and age there isn't a lot of sex education about contraception etc. so they would probably do it without protection if they really wished to. Also, if a 13 year old girl did decide to go on the pill it would probably be due to being in a relationship (even though it may not be seen as ethical for a girl of this age to be in such a relationship it is irrelevant if it happens anyway). So is it not better that the option is there, if she would do it with out anyway?

That is what I looked like at 13.
Thirteen year olds should not be having sex.
By letting them have the pill it sends the message that it is ok, and it's not!

Nice goat

'I didn't do it, therefore nobody else should. Here I am with a goat. Your argument is invalid'

Grow up.

You think 13 year olds should be having sex? You're the one who needs to grow up tbh.

Don't you think that a pharmacist would also know all this and explain it to anyone asking for the pill?

Also a lot of the risks have more to do with age than how long someone has been on the pill.

Again, I'm pretty sure there would be a consultation involved. It wouldn't be like going in and buying paracetamol.

Because letting them have the pill means you are advocating child abuse.

What should be happening is finding out why the hell 13 year old girls want to have sex in the first place!

Look above. So you think it is fine to tell a 13 year old to go out and get raped?

Let me break it down for you doctor cox style princess. Teenagers have sex. Welcome to the real world. I'm not saying its right but it happens. Nothing can be done to stop it, we have seen abstinence based sex ed is a complete joke and doesn't work.

When I have kids I will be educating them about contraception so they at least don't regret their decision to have sex for the rest of their lives. Tell me how it goes when you have your kids and are a grandparent before they even hit 16/ have to endure them going through an abortion.

lmao no, I think that WHEN young people enter into a sexual relationship they should have the facilities available to them to look after themselves properly. Clearly, you didn't have sex at thirteen (at least with a human, as the look on your poor goat's face suggests otherwise). Other young people WILL. That's not something that's going to change in the near future. The main factors at play (i.e. acting as encouragement) are their hormones and their peers, not the type of contraception available.
make them watch the gory bits of One Born Every minute in sex ed.... i'm not squeamish but the thought of forceps, episiotomy and tearing horrified me so should put most girls that age off sex completely

"Girls as young as 13 should be able to walk into a high-street chemist and get the contraceptive pill if they want it".

It's a pretty hot topic at the moment, and I was just wondering what everyone's opinions are - will it just make it easier to have sex and therefore encourage sex from such a young age, at an age that for most girls is just after puberty?? Or will it prevent unwanted teen pregnancies??

Lets start the debate

No, thirteen year old girls should be locked in their homes (while not at school) until seventeen, when they may be allowed outside to shag whoever they like.

Though I rarely ever agree with Nigel Farage, he put forward on Question time last night that if the government advocates giving 13 year old girls the contraceptive pill then it is subsequently advocating breaking the law, that is the age of consent being at 16.

It's addressing the reality that a law which is impossible to enforce all the time is already being broken. Not many people are going to have sex because the pill's available. They're already flouting the law and our priority should be preventing pregnancy, not being all morally absolutist because unfortunately that just doesn't work.
