Difference between rit. and rall.

Seems like a simple enough question but seems to create a lot of disagreement. What is the difference between ritardando and rallentando?

A rallentando is when you gradully get slower.
A Ritenuto is when you slow down.
So Rit. is a much more immediate effect compared to a Rall.
Rit. is to play in a slower tempo whereas Rall. is to slow down.
Hope this helps

I know that one; it's a 'holding back' over a few notes, so more temporary.
