Best Uni for Zoology?

It doesn't matter where the uni is, travelling distance is not an issue.
Which 5 unis do you guys think would be good for zoology?
Or are just good in your opinion.
Please bare in mind i need 2 good unis, 2 medium, 1 fall-back.

the best way to decide is to go visit them and choose the one that you prefer.
you can also look on the good university guide for league tables etc

I've moved this from choosing a university to the biology, chemistry and physics subforum.

Well so many of those universities are "good" universities. From the excellent (Imperial, Durham, Bristol, St Andrews, UCL) to the good redbricks and city unis (Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff). I don't think (m)any of those unis are "poor". I can't comment on the zoology courses at most of those though..

go to open days. see which one ''feels right'' to you. check out their course structure. see which one ''looks best'' to you. hopefully this will reduce your list to ones you're most interested in. in fact, obviously it might be hard to visit all uni's, therefore i would suggest picking ones yourself; the one's you're most interested in, visit their open days, visit the city etc.

try to visit some at least. if not just deduce the ones you'remost interested in; the ones that offer the best course and those that are highly respected and fussed about; that would make you feel honoured to go to etc :smile:

Travelling to the uni once and once only will be fine. As i can catch a plane and what not. But flying all the way from South Africa for an open day would just be a waste of money.

You're doing animal management at college. Will that limit your options at all? Then you need to think about whether you'd prefer to live in a city or somewhere quieter. Be sure to look at the zoology course details at different universities as well, the courses can differ a fair bit.

do you want to study at a uni that is north or south of the country(or any where else)i.e would you like to live in sctoland or london? :p:

i think you should just base your opinions on the uni as a whole; its history and how respected it is :smile:

Well it only teaches the sciences, so I'd hope so.

OP, redbricks and similar unis like Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham and Newcastle are strong in the sciences. I don't know a great deal about zoology in general (or Newcastle's course and modules) but I do know they have good links with wildlife trusts in the region (Northumberland in particular has great countryside and wildlife) plus zoos and the Centre for Life (a major world-leading science centre in Newcastle).

Imperial's the specialist science university (ie. they only teach the sciences). I don't know what zoology's like. UCL and Durham are excellent universities. Durham's zoology/biology department doesn't strike me as particularly fantastic, but is still good (I could be mistaken, it may be great). Durham's physics and chemistry departments are easily amongst the top three - five in the country and it just strikes me that biology doesn't match them.

Nottingham's an excellent university. I've heard they have a great zoology course. There are plenty of other strong universities in that list, Glasgow, St Andrews, Cardiff.....

You say you want back up unis etc. It's hard to suggest some, what qualifications are you taking, what are you looking for in terms of entry requirements?

I know some very good universities have gone into clearning in the past. Mainly the Scottish ancients (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee) but also the strong redbrick type unis such as Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and Sheffield. Whether they regularly feature in clearing, I don't know. The only university I know that has definately gone into clearing for zoology (in the past couple of years) is Anglia Ruskin.

I doubt it's particularly comptetitive

When you apply for zoology with most of the uni's you are counted as a biology applicant, so changing from Biology to Zoology doesn't really make a difference. Also the first year at most universities is general biology then you specialize.
