Where is my serial number?

I'm filling out the provisional license form and it says it needs my serial number for the document i'm sending (which is my passport). Where is it and how many digits should it be?
It probably doesn't make a difference, but is this a driving license application? A quick Google image search brings up an example of a passport photo page here: http://www.pagenumberone.co.uk/articles/Henry_Okocha_Int_Passport.jpg - it's not a UK passport, but it illustrates the point, as a UK passport will have the same format. The 'serial number' will be the 'passport number' - in this case, A1187976.
